What's New

Mercedes says the S-Class sets the standard by which all other luxury sedans strive to achieve, but the 2015 Mercedes-Benz S65 AMG doesn't think too much of those standards. Eclipsing even the S63 AMG, the S65 AMG is the ultimate luxury sedan; While the 2015 S65 AMG carries over the 621 hp V-12 biturbo engine from the current model, it pairs it to a new AMG seven-speed shiftronic transmission. Adding two speeds from today's S65 will make for a smoother, more efficient sedan. New styling is in line with the 2014 S550, and the 2015 S65 AMG adds new, lighter and stronger 20-inch AMG forged light-alloy wheels. The 16 spokes are twisted--and when in motion--catch and radiate light to the center of the wheel hub, making the wheels appear even larger. Sportier air intakes on the front end complement the new look.

Who It's For

We've driven the 2014 Mercedes-Benz S550, and really, it's a very advanced, complete vehicle. The S63 AMG however, ups performance considerably. It takes the ample 455 horsepower on tap, and cranks that up to 577 horses, not to mention the additional AMG touches. The 2015 S65 AMG? More. More power, more money, more panache and pomp. The 621-hp twin-turbo V-12 is the only 12-cylinder engine available from a German automaker at present, as BMW and Audi have downsized their top trims, in hopes of increasing fleet fuel efficiency. With S65 AMG badges it's all about swagger. The ultimate version of the ultimate sedan from Mercedes-Benz.

What We Think

We were quick fans of the 2014 Mercedes-Benz S-Class, which ushers the automaker's ultra-luxe sedan into a new era of technology. That car already has semi-autonomous driving features, an array of highly advanced safety features, and plenty of cutting edge tech. And while the S550's performance is ample, the S65 AMG adds a new level of distinction, performance, and exclusivity. We expect the S65 AMG to have a small production run, to serve those looking for the ultimate German luxury sedan. While AMG has given the sedan its regular complement of aesthetic enhancements, make no mistake, this is still on the more conservative side. But there's certainly a market for this vehicle, and in looking for faults, we're coming up pretty short. We only wish we could afford one ourselves.
