What's New
BMW is bringing out a few new cars to the 2013 New York Auto Show, but the 328d is something to watch. Now the 3 Series sedan that is so popular is available with a diesel engine, improving on its already decent fuel economy. The new 328d will most likely have the same styling as the non-diesel model, as well as the same technological and safety amenities. The new diesel variant is powered by a TwinPower Turbo four-cylinder engine, and produces 180 horsepower, letting it go from 0 to 60 mph in around 7.2 seconds.
Who It's For
For those who love their 3 Series models, BMW is giving them a diesel version to help cut down costs at the pump. Although the majority of people who own a 3 Series can afford the current escalating gas prices, it never hurts to save a few extra bucks here and there. The 328d is the only diesels in its class, making it more fuel-efficient than the Audi A4, Acura TL and Lexus IS 250. If it's priced anywhere near the normal 3 Series, it will fall in the middle of the overall price range of the class, keeping it competitive and attractive to potential buyers.
Key Features
Along with the debut of the 2014 BMW 328d, the automaker has announced new features that will be available on many models down the line. Some standout features that will be available on the 328d are:
4G LTE mobile hotspot
Standad BMW Assist eCall emergency call service
TeleService that tracks vehicle maintenance needs
What We Think
With the vehicle market moving toward better gas mileage and greener forms of energy, the 2014 BMW 328d fits right in with the trend. New models from many brands are being introduced with a diesel, hybrid, or plug-in variants, making for a more sustainable future, which is what BMW is aiming for. The 3 Series is already a great option for shoppers in the entry-luxury segment, and the addition of a diesel engine is sure to be a hit among car buyers when it hits the showroom floor.
