Underneath its radical exterior styling, the 2014 Jeep Cherokee is still an off-roader at heart.

What's New

While the name may sound familiar, the 2014 Jeep Cherokee is all-new and gets its DNA from Fiat's Compact U.S. Wide architecture (CUS-wide). The 2014 Jeep Cherokee is the first vehicle in Chrysler Group's portfolio to employ a nine-speed automatic transmission and 3.2-liter Pentastar V-6 engine. This combination is good for 31 mpg combined while the 2.4-liter Tigershark MultiAir four-cylinder engine is 45 percent more fuel efficient than the Jeep Liberty's 3.7-liter V-6. Jeep also claims that this engine is good for a 500 mile range, as well. While it may not look like your standard-issue Jeep model, the Cherokee can go off-road with the best of them thanks to a 56:1 crawl ratio. For those keeping track at home, that's good for a 90 percent increase over the Liberty it's replacing.

Who It's For

The compact SUV segment just got a little more crowded with the addition of the 2014 Jeep Cherokee. Now, those who are in need of a vehicle that can haul both people and cargo without breaking the bank have another option to choose from. Jeep promises that the Second Coming of the Cherokee will offer the usual off-roading capabilities while still being a comfortable people mover. Competition in the compact SUV segment is fierce with the likes of the Honda CR-V, Toyota RAV4, and Mazda CX-5 running around. However, Jeep is confident that it will be able to carve out its own piece of the segment pie with the all-new 2014 Cherokee.

Key Features

The 2014 Jeep Cherokee is all-new for the latest model year and comes with an array of new features including:
  • A nine-speed automatic transmission, the first Chrysler Group vehicle to use it
  • 3.2-liter Pentastar V-6 engine, also a first for any Chrysler Group vehicle
  • Available Uconnect system and 8.4-inch touch screen
  • 31 mpg combined

What We Think

Captain Obvious says the 2014 Jeep Cherokee isn't much of a looker but the automaker says this reincarnation is a modern interpretation. Besides, beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and some of us are coming around to the new styling. No matter what side you find yourself on, there's no denying that the all-new Cherokee is still a Jeep, as it has been packed with all of the normal, and some new off-roading features. The addition of the all-new 3.2-liter Pentastar V-6 and nine-speed automatic transmission should also attract buyers strictly on the estimated 31 mpg combined it achieves. The 2014 Jeep Cherokee also features a lot of new technology from Chrysler Group and in today's day and age, the more tech a vehicle has, the better. The say beauty is in the eye of the beholder and once you see the Cherokee's strengths, this new, modern design is easier to stomach. Jeep hopes to move 250,000 Cherokee units annually, a lofty goal, but we expect the masses to gravitate towards it. Only time will tell if they can get past that front-end though, and, admittedly, it does grow on you (very slowly) so stay tuned.
