The 2015 Audi A3 Sedan debuts with a message: Audi takes the North American market very seriously. In Europe, the A3 Sportback is very popular, and caters to the continental love for hatchbacks. In the U.S. the A3 has shown promise, and continues to grow, with more than half of all models sold running on diesel power. But available early next year, the 2015 Audi A3 Sedan will take the opposite approach, catering to the American affinity for classic sedan styling and functionality. Applying elements of Audi's larger luxury sedans, the German automaker hopes smaller packaging and an accessible price will lure more entry-level luxury buyers to the brand. And those buyers will have plenty of choice, with a variety of powertrains including gasoline, TDI diesel, and even a plug-in hybrid electric A3 Sportback e-tron to arrive in the U.S. later after the sedans. Buyers looking for a more performance-oriented ride can opt for the S3 Sedan, which will feature an enhanced 2.0-liter gasoline engine, S-badges, and some added styling flair.

Who It's For

Recently, the entry-level luxury segment just upped the ante with the debut of the 2014 Mercedes-Benz CLA: attractive, luxurious, and most importantly, accessibly priced. The CLA starts just under $30,000, which opens it up to a new set of buyers that might have passed on the slightly pricier Mercedes-Benz C-Class. Likewise, Audi is stepping up its entry-level game. While the current generation A3 seems to have been left on the sidelines during Audi's curvaceous, alluring transformation, the 2015 Audi A3 Sedan takes cues from Audi's breadwinner, the A4. The clean, streamlined interior also brings some of the intriguing styling and eye for detail that has been closely associated with the automaker from Ingolstadt.

  • Four-cylinder engines: choice of 1.8-liter and 2.0-liter gasoline, and 2.0-liter TDI diesel; S3 performance version will feature more powerful 2.0-liter engine, S-line features.
  • All engines mated to a standard S-tronic automatic transmission, four selectable drive modes available
  • A3 Hybrid plug-in electric variant will follow, and is confirmed for the U.S. market.

What We Think

In an effort to increase its market share in the ever-expanding entry-level luxury market, the 2015 Audi A3 and S3 sedans will arrive offering a new level of features and technology not previously available at this price point. In-car connectivity with 4G LTE, a variety of engines and driver-selectable driving modes seen on Audi's pricier models, and traditional four-door styling will help the A3 family win over more buyers. Key to the A3's success will be how closely it can compete with aggressively priced alternatives from the competition, such as the Mercedes-Benz CLA. If the 2015 A3 is competitively priced, it's likely to increase market share and appeal.
