2016 Audi A3 TDI Sportback Debut

The middle child in the A3 family

What's New

The 2016 Audi A3 TDI Sportback is the latest addition to the large A3 brood. Its siblings, including the A3 sedan, A3 Cabriolet, TDI sedan, high-performance S3, and A3 Sportback e-tron launch at different times, but they all share a common theme: true luxury and performance in a small package.

Rumor once had it that the A3 TDI Sportback wouldn't be returning to the U.S.. However, Audi execs said that an outpouring of support from fans was convincing enough to change their minds. When it arrives in the U.S. for the summer of 2015, the hatch will feature a 2.0-liter diesel engine good for 150 horsepower. This is mated to a smooth six-speed S-tronic automated manual transmission, which features the control of a manual gearbox with the convenience of an automatic.

Who It's For

Audi's A3 lineup appeals to young buyers thanks to the small size and affordability of these cars. But those who opt for the TDI models will prioritize fuel economy. Audi's TDI models generally deliver an average of 30 percent better fuel economy than their gasoline counterparts, making them attractive options for those who don't like filing up at the gas station. We expect the Sportback model will feature some additional interior space over the sedan, which should help make it more comfortable for families.

Key Features

On the 2016 Audi A3 TDI Sportback, expect the following technology:
  • New Audi connect with read-aloud news headlines, Facebook and Twitter alerts, and access to more than 7,000 Internet radio stations
  • Picture navigation feature gets drivers to their destinations by inputting a picture instead of typing in an address

What We Think

We drove the Audi A3 sedan, which has just recently been introduced. We enjoyed this car's sprightly performance and high-end infotainment system, and we expect these qualities to appear on the Sportback TDI as well. We think that the Sportback will provide additional cargo space for those looking to drive larger groups on a regular basis. But we think most buyers will end up going with the stylish sedan.
