Although Mazda's celebrating the MX-5's 20th anniversary with a special trim package, we wish they'd push something like this new Superlight concept into production instead.

Appropriately, Mazda's press kit is superlight on specific details at this point, but it's obvious the Superlight is designed to be a hardcore, no-frills roadster. Designers scrapped the windscreen, windows and top, installing a curvaceous tonneau cover with headrests, and a flared cowl that wraps into the dashboard. It may offer little protection from the elements, but the smooth, slender profile looks absolutely stunning.

We'll know more come September 15, when the MX-5 Superlight is officially unveiled at the 2009 Frankfurt motor show. Stay with Automobile Magazine for all the latest news from the Frankfurt show.
