In terms of significance to the European industry, the two most important announcements at Frankfurt were the new Opel Astra and its deadly rival, the VW Golf. And the Golf, with dynamic styling and the promise of great driving ability, stole the march on the Opel, whose styling looked contrived. The Astra is powered by a range of engines that produce from 80 to 200 hp in turbocharged 2.0-liter guise. The car's most important feature is interlinking stability control, ABS, and electronic damping, the first time this has happened on a volume car. It was shown in four-door hatchback guise, with a long-wheelbase wagon and two-door coupe following later.
