Celebrating the 25th anniversary of Quattro, Audi took the wraps off its latest concept, the Allroad Quattro. Audi unveiled the car with a series of dropping veils that led the assembled press to anticipate a groundbreaking concept. When the curtain fell, it turned out that the Allroad Quattro concept was just a tarted up A6 Avant. While we wonder if Audi designers are running out of fresh ideas, the Allroad Quattro concept does provide an impressive array of new technologies. Showcased in the concept is Audi's new 4.0-liter V-8 TDI, a diesel with common rail fuel injection, making it one of the world's most advanced diesel powerplants. Producing 286 horsepower and 479 lb-ft of torque, the diesel hauls the Allroad Quattro from 0 to 62 mph in 6.4 seconds. Variable ride height is supplied via an air suspension, enabling the Allroad to conquer both snowy mountain roads and vast autobahn stretches with ease. But the most important technology featured in this concept is Audi's road vision. Infrared scanners inspect the road in front of the car identifying possible hazards such as black ice. When the car detects a slippery road ahead, it will warn the driver and enable the proper stability control program.
