It has been a memorable show season, with the massive Frankfurt Motor Show tragically interrupted by the 9/11 atrocities. The automotive industry felt the immediate effect of the post attack consumer confidence freefall, but it soon buoyed back up thanks to hefty financial incentives that kept dealership traffic flowing, assembly lines rolling, and contributed to the economy remaining afloat. It seems fitting to conclude the season in the Big Apple, where thankfully drama was limited to product unveilings and the historical beginnings of a new automotive division. After the Frankfurt, Tokyo, Los Angeles, Detroit, Chicago, Geneva shows, it's hard to believe that the manufacturers could have any secrets left to reveal. Yet, over 40 manufacturers set up residence at the Jacob Javits Convention Center to show more than 1000 new cars, trucks, minivans, SUVs, exotic sports cars, and funky concept vehicles. MT Online braved security-slowed airports to capture the highlights on film and video, offering a guided tour of the latest machines and a few standout vehicles worth revisiting.
