2006 Mercedes-Benz M-class Rear

Mercedes' Alabama-built SUV enters its second generation with larger dimensions, room for five and a new 3.5-liter V6 with 268 horsepower; the V8 carries over. A new independent suspension and unibody construction make it more carlike than before, while full-time 4WD with Hill Start Assist and Hill Descent Control (but no low-range) keep its off-road abilities respectably high. A planned long-wheelbase model will seat seven, and a diesel engine and high-performance AMG variant are in discussion.
