BMW's disguised, grossly overpriced 7-series has proven much more successful than Mercedes' disguised, grossly overpriced S-class, mostly because BMW's disguise is more clever. A 453-horsepower 6.8-liter V12 driving the back wheels beats the 7-series' 438-horsepower 6.0 V12, and only the 2'2" longer Roller has enough space for rear passengers to lie down. If those are worth the jump from $121,295 to $328,750 to you, you won't get an argument from BMW.
