2007 Mercedes-Benz S-class front2
Mercedes's flagship isn't the undisputed leader it once was, but this redesign might change that. The drastic upgrade and simplification of engines makes for a great start. Forget the first three models of the last S-class, for the 275-horsepower S430, and 302-horsepower S500, and especially the shameful 241-horsepower S350 are all gone. Taking its place is the S550, featuring a new 32-valve 5.5-liter V8 with variable valve timing that sends its 382 horsepower through the world's first 7-speed automatic. An S600 with a 510-horsepower 5.5-liter V12 replaces the existing one; no S65 replacement has been mentioned. There's a little more length, width, and wheelbase than before, Distronic cruise control and Brake Assist got upgrades, new infra-red Night Vew Assist allows drivers to see 500 feet ahead, and a new slot in the dash accepts PCMCIA cards to meet audio needs. $86,175 for the S550 actually marks a slight decrease compared to the S500. Sales start in February.
