2002 Bentley Arnage Review

Classic, one-of-a-kind luxury sedan with a price tag to match.

Reviewed by Automotive on

The 2002 Bentley Arnage classifies as a large, luxury sedan that increases its model lineup for the 2002 model year. The base 2002 Bentley Arnage Red Label remains basically unchanged from the 2001 model, but a high-performance model joins it for 2002. The engine in the 2002 Bentley Arnage T has been tuned to produce 50 horsepower and 30 lb-ft of torque more than the turbocharged V-8 found in the base Red Label. Even though the 2002 Bentley Arnage T is a heavy car, weighing more than two tons, it marks one of the fastest sedans on the road.

The Range

Body Styles: sedan
Engines: 6.75-liter V-8
Transmissions: four-speed automatic
Models: Bentley Arnage Red Label, Bentley Arnage T

What's New

For the 2002 model year, the available models of the Bentley Arnage increase to two with the addition of the high-performance 2002 Bentley Arnage T. The engine in the T model of the 2002 Bentley Arnage produces 450 horsepower and 645 lb-ft of torque and reaches a maximum speed of 170 mph. In addition to changing the engine, this new model has a thicker front antiroll bar and an additional antiroll bar at the rear. The spring rates at the front of the T have been firmed up to provide a sportier ride, and it also gains an electronic stability system, which marks a first for any Bentley cars.

Both models of the 2002 Bentley Arnage sedans come mostly hand-built, with the Red Label featuring a more stately and conservative look, which remains unchanged from the previous model year. Modifications to the T make it look sportier. The new 2002 Bentley Arnage T has an integrated rear spoiler, a new front bumper with a lower air dam, no chrome trim around the front fascia, and a Black Label badge. Both models look big with a wheelbase of almost 123 inches and an overall length of 212 inches.

As to be expected, the interior of the 2002 Bentley Arnage looks richly appointed to give a feeling of optimal luxury and elegance. A choice of walnut, oak, maple, or black lacquer trim complements Connolly leather. The interior of the T looks sportier also by using wood with a darker stain than that found in the traditional Red Label. Standard features include a DVD-based navigation system with a screen that raises and lowers out of the dash when not in use, power front seats, and a power steering wheel, all of which have memory functions. Power-adjustable rear seats also come standard.

Performance & Handling

The 2002 Bentley Arnage Red Label comes equipped with a 6.75-liter V-8 turbocharged engine that produces 400 horsepower and 616 lb-ft of torque. The twin-turbo V-8 found in the T produces 450 horsepower and 645 lb-ft of torque. Both models use a four-speed automatic transmission only. The automatic transmission features an adaptive shift control system that makes modifications based on learning how the driver operates the car.

All models feature fully independent, double-wishbone front and rear suspension. They come equipped with a computer-controlled, active suspension system that continuously modifies the dampening rates of the suspension based on road conditions. Even with the modifications to the springs in the T, this car focuses on comfort, and the ride remains as smooth and quiet as drivers expect.

The addition of the rear antiroll bar and the thicker front antiroll bar in the 2002 Bentley Arnage T means that body roll reduces during cornering. Both the powerful engines and the weight of both models of the 2002 Bentley Arnage mean that fuel economy suffers.

Both models of the 2002 Bentley Arnage include anti-lock brakes and traction control as standard safety equipment. The 2002 Bentley Arnage T also has a stability control system, side-impact airbags, and full-length curtain side airbags as standard features. Airbags remain unavailable in the Red Label. Front and rear parking sensors provide an option for both models.
