1999 Bentley Azure Review

Stately delivery of luxury and power.

Reviewed by Automotive on

Introduced in 1995 as one of the most wanted convertibles on the market, the Bentley Azure subsequently underwent a make-over. Bentley’s engineers transformed this car from fitting into the English countryside to a more sports and muscle-themed car for the American market beginning with its 1998 model. The Azure is more or less a copy of the Arnage model, which was one of two new models introduced by Bentley for the first time in almost two decades. It provides luxury and power while ignoring current technology and the potential improvements that could be introduced to this old-world style sedan.

The Range

Body Styles: convertible
Engines: 6.75-liter V-8
Transmissions: four-speed automatic
Models: Bentley Azure, Bentley Azure Mulliner

What's New

The 1999 Bentley Azure gets an upgrade in the engine to 400 horsepower, along with more leg room in the rear of the car. Further improvements include audible park-distance control and a stiffer body shell. Larger wheels and brakes were also introduced with this model.

The 1999 Bentley Azure has a stiffer body shell that was introduced to help with the additional weight. This results from the 6.75-liter V-8, compared to the BMW twin turbo-charged 4.4-liter engine previously used. The 18-inch wheels and Pirelli P Zero tires were also introduced to deal with the additional weight. Otherwise, the stately look of Bentley lives on in this new model of the Bentley Azure. Round headlights, chrome grill and the rims with a trademark B in the center all provide the look expected of Bentley owners worldwide.

The 1999 Bentley Azure's seats were reshaped to provide two additional inches of leg room for rear-seat passengers, as well as an additional inch for head and shoulder room.

Performance & Handling

The 1999 Bentley Azure gets its braking performance dropped with the larger brakes. Handling remains acceptable, as does the 400 horsepower and 619 lb-ft of torque provided by the new engine.

The 1999 Bentley Azure provides a guarantee of safety with anti-lock brakes (ABS), four disc brakes with ventilated discs, and a limited slip differential. Responsive suspension and stability control further enforce safety in this model, along with an immobilizer with anti-lock code to help prevent theft.
