2002 Bentley Azure Review

Luxury convertible that combines glamour with performance.

Reviewed by Automotive on

While many people think of chauffeur-driven luxurious sedans when they think of Bentley, the company also produces cars with drivers in mind, such as the 2002 Bentley Azure. Introduced in 1995, this large, two-door, four-passenger luxury convertible underwent a design refresh in 1998, and has remained the same since then. Available in two trim levels, the base and the high-performance Mulliner, 2002 marks the final year of production for the base trim of the Bentley Azure.

The Range

Body styles: two-door convertible
Engines: 6.75-liter V-8
Transmissions: four-speed automatic
Models: Bentley Azure, Bentley Azure Mulliner

What's New

For the launch of the 2002 Bentley Azure, no changes or modifications appear. In fact, no changes have been made to this luxury convertible since it underwent a design refresh in 1998.

The 2002 Bentley Azure uses the same chassis as the Continental R. The chassis gets modified to allow for a four-passenger convertible, and due to the fact that antiroll bars were not included, it was also significantly reinforced. From the outside, the 2002 Bentley Azure conveys a sense of elegance and presence, while not belying its power.

The large size of the Azure allows for a roomy interior, as well as plenty of cargo space in the trunk. To minimize loss of cargo space, the power roof top stows behind the rear seats under a panel that sits flush with the car. Opening or closing the roof top comes with the simple press of a button inside the convertible.

By upgrading to the Mulliner, drivers get more standard features that enhance the car. The 2002 Bentley Azure Mulliner features 18-inch wheels over the 17-inch standard wheels, as well as front air dams, wheel-arch flares, and a mesh grille. As with the interior, the exterior of the 2002 Bentley Azure, including the bodywork, can be modified by the purchaser to make each and every convertible truly one of a kind.

Pure luxury awaits any Bentley driver and the 2002 Bentley Azure does not diminish these expectations. The roomy interior comes covered in two-tone Connolly leather with fine wood trim and lamb’s wool carpets. Bolstered seats provide maximum comfort for all passengers, and front bucket seats are heated. Power front seats with four memory settings ease entry and exit to the rear of the convertible by moving automatically when the seatback tilts forward.

Standard features in both models of the 2002 Bentley Azure include a console-mounted, six-disc CD changer with a remote control and keyless entry. With several types of wood grain trims to choose from, plus a myriad of optional features, every 2002 Bentley Azure can be completely customized from tip to tail by the purchaser.

Performance & Handling

The 2002 Azure comes equipped with a 6.75-liter, V-8, turbocharged engine that provides 400 horsepower and 590 lb-ft of torque. It couples with a four-speed automatic transmission that provides extremely fast acceleration and a reported top speed of 150 mph. The engine in the 2002 Bentley Azure Mulliner has been tuned so that it produces 420 horsepower and an additional 60 lb-ft of torque. The suspension of the Mulliner has also been modified to produce a smoother and more comfortable ride.

Although the 2002 Bentley Azure makes for a large car in all measurements, it still provides a sporty ride. The automatic ride control system, which uses a computer to control and modify the suspension dampers based on road conditions, optimizes ride comfort and handling. The full-length lever arm front suspension and semi-trailing rear arm suspension make this rear-drive vehicle exciting to drive. Steering and handling feel precise so that maneuvering seems surprisingly nimble for a car this size, although cornering at speed causes body roll.

Within the 2002 Bentley Azure, standard safety equipment includes anti-lock brakes with electronic brake force distribution, traction control, front and rear adjustable headrests, and front seat belt pretensioners. Front airbags for the driver and front-seat passenger provide the only standard airbags. Side airbags and rear airbags remain unavailable the 2002 Azure.
