1995 Bentley Turbo R Review

A luxury ride with performance underpinnings.

Reviewed by Automotive on

The 1995 Bentley Turbo R follows a high-quality, prestigious, and luxurious tradition with an unusual twist. At first glance, it looks almost exactly like its less-expensive sibling, the Brooklands; the appearance, features, and engine size are the same. Even though the specifications seem to indicate no reason why it costs so much more money, the reason is because the engine is supercharged. It may be the same size as the Brooklands, but it is far more powerful.

Bentley is also a very exclusive manufacturer, which can make purchasing the Turbo R difficult. The small production runs of Bentley vehicles also means the used market is miniscule. Part of Bentley’s prestige comes from exclusivity, which is heavily enforced by the high price tag. For the price of a Brooklands, a driver could easily buy half a dozen high-quality vehicles with money to spare. This is going to discourage most people from ever purchasing a Brooklands, but the exclusivity is a large incentive for many of the people that do buy it.

Body Styles: sedan
Engines: 6.8-liter V-8
Transmissions: four-speed automatic
Models: Bentley Turbo R

What's New

The 1995 Bentley Turbo R receives no major changes from the previous year’s model.

The 1995 Bentley Turbo R is a large, conservatively-designed sedan. The style is distinct compared to other auto manufacturers, which helps augment its prestige. However, it does look identical to the Brooklands and is immediately recognized as a Bentley. This is a major advantage for drivers specifically purchasing it as a sign of prestige or to impress clients or business associates, in addition to drivers just looking for an attractive vehicle.

The 1995 Bentley Turbo R has a large, luxurious interior. Standard equipment include air-conditioning, automatic climate control, power heated mirrors, power locks, power windows, reading lights, power seats, cruise control, trip computer, power seats, anti-theft alarm system, keyless entry, leather seating, heated seats, front and rear cigar lighters, auto-dim mirrors, premium audio, AM/FM radio, and a cassette player.

Performance & Handling

The 1995 Bentley Turbo R has excellent handling and performance. The supercharged engine gives amazing acceleration and a blistering top speed that is quite at odds with the aesthetic appearance of this vehicle. It also handles and maneuvers far better than might be expected, as well. However, it's much stronger in terms of power than maneuverability but doesn't handle as well as a sports car. This shouldn't deter shoppers though; it still outperforms most luxury vehicles.

The 1995 Bentley Turbo R provides dual-front airbags and four-wheel anti-lock brakes as standard features. Over all, it's typical for a high-end luxury vehicle released in 1995, although the safety features all less robust than later vehicles in this price range. The point is, it's well built, so it can reasonably stand up to accidents, even at high speeds.
