The 2008 BMW 1 Series gets both coupe and convertible body styles this year.

Exterior

The 2008 BMW 1 Series comes in eleven different colors. The exterior features include: an integrated rear deck lid spoiler, chrome trim, a two-way power glass moonroof with one-touch operation, a sliding sun shade, and a wind deflector. Other features include: auto-on and -off headlights with adaptive light control, halogen freeform fog lights, programmable daytime running lights, heated power mirrors, rain-sensing windshield wipers, and heated wiper jets. The 17-inch, star spoke, light alloy wheels come with run-flat all-season tires. The vehicle also features chrome-plated exhaust tips. Exterior options include bi-xenon headlamps, cornering lamps, and a demountable rear rack.

Interior

Many interior features on the 2008 BMW 1 Series include a leatherette seat trim, eight-way manually adjustable front bucket seats with two-way adjustable headrests, and passenger seat height adjustment. The rear seats split 60/40, fold, and have a rear center console with a fold-down armrest and storage bin. The three-spoke, leather-wrapped, tilt and telescopic, multi-function steering wheel includes Bluetooth, cruise, and audio controls. An on-board computer features a check control vehicle monitoring system with a pictogram display, a trip computer, and a tire pressure monitoring system. Coded drive-away protection, a central locking system with a double-lock feature, and two-step unlock are included on the 1 Series. The ten speaker audio system includes an anti-theft AM/FM/CD/MP3 stereo system with radio data systems, an auxiliary audio input jack, and Auto-Store. The automatic dual-zone climate control includes auto air recirculation with pollen detection activation, a micro-filter, recall for individual user settings, and a heat at rest function. The rear window has a defogger, and the glove box locks. The BMW 1 Series vehicles also provide an auxiliary power outlet, driver and front-passenger vanity mirrors, front cup holders, and front-door storage compartments. A lined and illuminated luggage compartment with a storage net and lashing points, a folding front center armrest with integrated storage, front and rear floor mats, and remote trunk release round out the interior features.

Performance & Handling

The 2008 BMW 1 Series comes with a three-liter, inline six-cylinder, gasoline engine with a rating of 230 horsepower that provides for 200 lb-ft of torque. The 135i models rate at 300 horsepower, providing 300 lb-ft of torque. The six-speed transmission uses manual shift. The vehicle uses rear drive, which makes it difficult to navigate in harsh weather conditions. It also features an engine start button, stop button, and electronic throttle control. Dynamic Stability Control comes with brake fade compensation, brake standby, brake drying, start-off assistance, and dynamic traction control. The BMW 1 Series includes an aluminum double-pivot spring, a strut type front suspension, and a five-link rear suspension. The front and rear get twin-tube gas-pressurized shock absorbers and stabilizer bars. The 1 Series includes electronic power steering with Servotronic power assistance.

Safety

The 1 Series comes with the standard four-wheel anti-lock braking system, dual front two-stage airbags with occupant sensors and an indicator light, front side-impact airbags, and a front and rear side curtain head protection system. The trunk has an emergency release handle. Other features include an interlocking door anchoring system, a BMW Advanced Safety System, crash sensors, automatic door unlocking, hazard lights, and interior light activation. The rear seats get LATCH child seating attachments. The convertible’s front side airbags extend higher to protect the occupants’ heads.
