Enthusiasts can celebrate the fact that the 2 Series returns to BMW's lineup for the 2022 model year. In fact, the 2022 BMW 2 Series coupe is a completely redesigned model, and we can't wait to see if it's half as much fun as we've had in previous 2 Series models.

What's New

The 2022 2 Series coupe sees an increase in chassis stiffness, wider front and rear tracks, and new shock absorbers that are expected to improve the model's handling. An Adaptive M suspension is also available that includes electronically controlled shock absorbers and a choice of ride settings.

New, stiffer bearings on the front axle are expected to improve steering feel. An available Variable Sports Steering system is said to improve both driving feel and reduce steering effort during low-speed parking situations.

New colors include Brooklyn Grey Metallic and Thundernight Metallic. Compared to the last-gen 2 Series, the new one is 2.6 inches wider and rides on a wheelbase that's been stretched by 2.0 inches. Those two dimensional changes alone should slightly change the car's appearance when seen in person next to the older model. In case you're wondering, the 4 Series coupe is about 9.0 inches longer and half an inch wider still.

M240i Upgrades

The M240i version of the 2 Series Coupe receives a 47 hp increase over the previous iteration, delivering 382 hp from the model's 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-6 engine through a standard eight-speed automatic transmission. BMW engineers have also reduced the M240i's front end lift relative to the outgoing model through aerodynamic improvements to the front lip spoiler, front splitter, air curtains, air deflectors and under floor covers for the fuel tank and rear differential. The M240i xDrive AWD will be the first 2022 2 Series launched, alongside the RWD version of the 230i. Later on, the M240i RWD and 230i AWD will join the 2022 2 Series lineup.

What About the 230i?

The 230i Coupe will first launch in RWD form with its 255-hp 2.0-liter turbo-four good for 295 lb-ft of torque. For those keeping score, that's 7 hp and 37 lb-ft more than the last two-door 2 Series model. Even this base model is said to be good for a 5.5-second sprint to 60 mph (you'll hit it in a BMW-estimated 4.1 seconds with the M240i xDrive model).

Of course, pricing dramatically separates the 230i coupe from the M240. The 2022 2 Series starts at around $37,500 in 230i form; go for the AWD M240i xDrive model and you're looking at a starting price just under $50,000 before options.

2022 2 Series Standard Equipment

A near-$40,000 starting price means the small 2022 2 Series is pricey even in base model form. So what do you get on a standard 230i? Here are some highlights: power front seats, adaptive cruise control, navigation, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, automatic emergency braking, lane departure warning, and blind-spot monitoring.

2 Series vs 2 Series Gran Coupe: What's the Difference?

While they may share a moniker, the 2 Series and 2 Series Gran Coupe have different underpinnings. The 228i and M235i xDrive Gran Coupes ride on the same BMW platform used for the X1 and X2 small SUVs instead of the rear-wheel-drive platform used by the 2 Series coupe/convertible. The 2 Series Gran Coupe is also a four-door sedan whereas the 2 Series coupe and M2 are both two doors.

Finally, the 2 Series Gran Coupe is available as a FWD or AWD while the non-Gran Coupe 2 Series comes in RWD or AWD flavors. If you're looking for maximum passenger space in the 2 Series lineup, stick with the Gran Coupe model. But if driving fun is your aim, try a 2 Series coupe model.

When Will the 2022 2 Series Be Available?

Production begins this summer on the 2022 BMW 2 Series. The coupes arrive in dealerships in November 2021.
