Overview

The 1996 BMW 3-Series includes two sedans, two coupes, two convertibles, and one hatchback wagon. The 318 models come with the 1.9-liter, four-cylinder engine, while the 328 models come with the 2.8-liter, four-cylinder engine. A five-speed manual transmission is standard on all models, with a four-speed automatic transmission available as an option. One noteworthy feature of this series is the power sunroof on the sedan and coupe models.

What's New

Each member of the BMW 3-Series lineup was outfitted with new engines for the 1996 model year. The 328 models come equipped with vented rear disc brakes, and automatic climate control is now standard on all models except for the 318ti. Upgraded sound systems are now optional for all models.

Exterior

All 1996 BMW 3-Series models come with power mirrors and 15-inch wheels, with optional metallic paint. The sedan and coupe trims come with a power sunroof, which is available as an option for the wagon model. Tinted glass and alloy wheels also come standard on the 328i Sedan, both convertible models, and both coupe models. Alloy wheels are optional for the wagon and the 318i Sedan. A rear ski bag is available as an option for the sedan models, and the convertible models have the option of a hardtop roof.

Interior

Bucket seats, air conditioning, power windows, and an AM/FM/Cassette audio system are standard on all models. Automatic climate control is also standard on all models, except the 318ti.

All models save the 328i Convertible come with vinyl upholstery; the 321i Convertible comes standard with leather upholstery. All models that come standard with vinyl upholstery come with the options of cloth and/or leather upholstery.

The 328 models of the 1996 BMW 3-Series come with power driver and front passenger seats and a leather wrapped, tilting steering wheel. Leather steering wheel trim is available as an option on the 318i Sedan, 318is Coupe, and 318ti. A trip computer comes standard on the 328 and 318ti models.

Heated front seats are an available option for all models except the 318ti. A sports package is available on the sedan. Sport seats are available for the 328i Sedan, 328i Convertible, and 319ti. An AM/FM/CD audio system is also available as an option for the 328i Sedan and 328i Convertible.

Performance & Handling

Power steering and cruise control are standard for all models except for the 318ti, which offers cruise control as an optional feature. Limited slip differential and traction control are optional on the 318 models; traction control is also optional for the 328 models. A sport suspension is optional for the 328i Sedan, 318is Coupe, and 318ti. A rollover protection system is available for the convertible models.

Safety

Anti-lock brakes and driver and passenger front airbags are standard on all models. Power door locks, an anti-theft alarm system, a rear window defroster, and intermittent windshield wipers are also standard equipment. The remaining standard safety features vary from model to model. For example, a rear window wiper is standard on the wagon model, while a lighted entry system is standard on the 318 models. Fog lights are standard on all models except the 318i Sedan and the 318ti, where they are available as an option. A keyless entry system is another available option for the 318ti.
