Overview

The 1997 BMW 3-Series has a wide variety of models with four body styles, two engine and transmission choices, and seven models. The 318 models all come standard with the 1.9-liter four-cylinder engine. The 328 models all come with the 2.8-liter six-cylinder engine. All models come standard with the five-speed manual transmission with the four-speed automatic transmission available as an option.

What's New

The 1997 BMW 3-Series receives traction control as a standard feature, and all models also get minor styling revisions to the cockpit rear fascia and grille.

Exterior

The 1997 BMW 3-Series is equipped with 15-inch wheels that are standard for all models. Metallic paint is optional for all models. All models except for the 318is Coupe also come with tinted glass. The 328 models and the 318is Coupe come with alloy wheels standard. Alloy wheels are optional on the 318i sedan and 318ti Hatchback. The sedan and convertible models also come with power exterior mirrors. The 318is Coupe and 318ti Hatchback come with power heated mirrors standard. This feature is optional for the other models. A power sunroof is available as an option for the non-convertible models, while the convertible models get the option of a hardtop roof. The 328is Coupe also has the option of a rear spoiler.

Interior

The 1997 BMW 3-Series include standard bucket seats, air-conditioning, and an AM/FM/Cassette audio system. Heated front seats are optional for all models, and with the exception of the hatchback, it also comes with two-zone automatic climate control. Vinyl upholstery is standard on all models except for the convertible models, which leather upholstery is standard.

The 1997 BMW 3-Series gives an option to provide leather upholstery while cloth upholstery is an available option for the 318i sedan, 318is coupe, and 318ti hatchback. Leather steering wheel trim is standard, except for the 318i sedan and the 318ti hatchback, but the hatchback has it as an option. The 328i sedan and convertible models have power driver and front passenger seats and a tilt steering wheel. The tilt steering wheel is also standard for the 328is coupe. Power windows are standard on all models except for the hatchback.

The 1997 BMW 3-Series 328 models get an optional AM/FM/Cassette/CD or AM/FM/CD audio system, and a premium audio system is optional for the sedan models and coupe models. The sedan models come with an optional rear ski bag, and the 328 models, hatchback, and convertible models also come with an optional trip computer. Sport seats and a sport package are optional for the convertible models. The sport package is also an available option for the 328is coupe and the hatchback model.

Performance & Handling

The 1997 BMW 3-Series come with traction control and power steering as standard. Cruise control is also standard on all models except for the hatchback, which has it as an option. Sport suspension is available as an option on all models except for the convertibles and the 328is coupe. A rollover protection system is optional for the convertible models, and the hatchback also has the option of limited slip differential.

Safety

The 1997 BMW 3-Series provide four-wheel anti-lock brakes, driver and passenger front airbags, intermittent windshield wipers, power door locks, and rear window defroster, which are all standard on all models. Fog lights are also standard except for the 318i sedan and the 318ti hatchback, which are available as options. An anti-theft alarm system is standard on all models except for the 318is coupe, and a lighted entry system is standard for the 318i sedan, 318is coupe, and 318ti hatchback. A keyless entry system is standard on the 328i sedan, while front side airbags are optional for both sedan models.
