2007 BMW 3-Series Review

Best of the entry-level luxury cars and then some.

Reviewed by Automotive on

Overview

The 2007 BMW 3 Series is one of the most expensive car series in the entry-level luxury segment. But with athletic handling, powerful engines of brilliant design, outstanding build quality, and a host of great features, these cars are worth the cost. The driving pleasure provided is also worth the price of admission. While there is tough competition in this segment, namely the offerings from Mercedes-Benz, Volvo, and Jaguar; the BMW vehicles still manage to distinguish themselves with class, performance, quality, and distinction. Buyers interested into entering the luxury car class can shop around, but that shopping should definitely include taking a look at the offerings from BMW.

The Range

Body Styles: sedan, coupe, convertible
Engines: 3.0-liter six-cylinder
Transmissions: six-speed manual, six-speed automatic with a manual mode
Models: BMW 328i, 328xi, 335i, 335xi sedan; 328i, 328xi wagon; 328i, 328xi, 335i coupes; 328i, 335i convertible

What's New

For 2007, the BMW 3 Series coupe and sedan have a twin-turbocharged six-cylinder engine, while the coupe gets a sleek new body. For the sedan line, the 330i becomes the 335i. Base 3 Series coupes, sedans, and wagons are renamed 328i and, when equipped with all-wheel drive, 328xi. Rear drive and all-wheel drive are available for coupes and wagons. Vehicles with the Premium package have a four-year subscription to BMW Assist telematics and real-time traffic updates for the navigation system. There is also a redesigned-3 Series convertible with a retractable hardtop, and an all-wheel-drive 335xi sedan.

Exterior

The 2007 BMW 3 Series compact entry-level luxury car is available as a convertible, coupe, sedan, and wagon. All body styles come in a rear-wheel-drive 328i trim level, and the coupe, sedan, and wagon are available in the all-wheel-drive 328xi trim. The convertible, coupe, and sedan can be had as the rear-drive 335i. The sedan is offered as the all-wheel-drive 335xi.

All 328i models have 16-inch alloy wheels, automatic headlights, a moonroof, heated mirrors, and rain-sensing wipers. Coupe and convertible versions offer 17-inch wheels and xenon headlamps and a sport tuned suspension for the coupe. The 335i models have a more powerful engine. The Sport Package specifies a firmer suspension on convertibles, sedans, and wagons, along with larger wheels and performance tires.

Interior

The 328i models have leatherette upholstery, automatic climate control, real walnut wood trim, and a 10-speaker CD stereo with an input jack for MP3 players. The 335i models add power front seats and a premium Harman Kardon Logic 7 sound system. The Premium Package upgrades to leather upholstery, Bluetooth connectivity, a full set of auto-dimming mirrors, BMW Assist telematics, and on 328i models, power seats. Stand-alone extras include active steering, an iDrive-based navigation system with real-time traffic updates, keyless startup, adaptive cruise control, three-stage heated seats, and satellite radio.

Performance & Handling

All 328i and 328xi models have a three-liter, inline six-cylinder engine that produces 230 hp and 200 lb-ft of torque. The 335i and 335xi models use the same six-cylinder, but it is equipped with twin turbochargers and direct injection. This engine kicks out 300 hp and 300 lb-ft of torque. A six-speed manual transmission is standard, while a six-speed automatic with a manual mode is optional. The 3 Series cars are class leaders for performance.

Handling is athletic and world-class; any 3 Series car will easily handle anything that can be thrown at it.

Safety

The 2007 BMW 3 Series offers standard safety equipment that includes dynamic brake control, anti-lock disc brakes, stability control, run-flat tires, front-seat side airbags, and full-length side curtain airbags. The 3 Series convertible lacks the side curtains but has a rollover protection system. The stability control system employs multiple features designed to improve braking performance, like periodically wiping the brake rotors when the windshield wipers are in use to keep brakes dry and snugging the pads to the rotors when the driver lifts off the throttle to increase brake responsiveness. All 3 Series cars offer rear parking sensors as an option.
