Overview

The 2008 BMW 3 Series comes with few new additions. However, it offers plenty of exterior and interior features to make up for this. Safety is a high priority on this vehicle, which pleases many potential buyers. Fuel economy ratings remain average and the power feels great for this class of vehicle. BMW offers plenty of models and body styles to choose from, making this a highly customizable vehicle.

The Range

Body Styles: sedan, coupe, convertible, wagon

What's New

The 2008 BMW 3 Series presents a new body style: the 335xi coupe. This body style uses all-wheel drive. A new optional upgrade to the Sport Package for the sedan and wagon body styles gives the vehicle steering-wheel-mounted paddle shifters.

Exterior

The 2008 BMW 3 Series comes in eleven different colors. The exterior features include high- and low-beam halogen headlights with corona headlight rings, halogen freeform front fog lights, adaptive brake lights, and heated dual power mirrors. Other features include heated windshield washer jets, rain-sensing windshield wipers, automatic headlight control, and ground lighting in the bottom of the exterior door handles. The 328 models get 16-inch alloy wheels, heated side mirrors, and a sunroof.

Interior

The 2008 BMW 3 Series includes many interior features, such as leatherette seating, manually adjustable front bucket seats with adjustable headrests, and a three-spoke leather-wrapped, tilting and telescopic, multi-function steering wheel with audio controls. Other features include electric analog instrumentation, LCD main and trip odometers, an on-board computer with a check control vehicle monitoring system and a pictogram display, a service interval indicator with a miles-to-service readout, and a tire pressure monitor. The BMW 3 Series has coded drive-away protection, power windows with a one-touch open and close feature, an anti-trapping feature and key off operation, a central locking system, dynamic cruise control, and power trunk release. The 10-speaker audio system includes an anti-theft AM/FM/CD/MP3 player with two subwoofers, radio data systems, and an auxiliary audio input. The BMW 3 has automatic tri-zone climate control with auto air recirculation, mist control, a bi-directional solar sensor, heat-at-rest, activated charcoal micro-filter ventilation, and a rear window defroster. The glove box locks and has a rechargeable take-out flashlight and a spare key holder. Other features include an auxiliary power outlet, dual front and rear cup holders, and dual illuminated visor vanity mirrors.

Performance & Handling

The 2008 BMW 3 Series employs a three-liter, six-cylinder engine or a four-liter, V-8 engine. The three-liter engine rates at 230 horsepower and provides 200 lb-ft of torque. The convertible 335i, coupe 335i, 335xi, sedan 335i, and 335xi all generate 300 horsepower and 300 lb-ft of torque. The convertible M3, coupe M3, and sedan M3 provide 414 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque. Transmission choices include a six-speed manual and a six-speed automatic. The car uses rear drive, which may be problematic in harsh weather.

The BMW 3 Series includes a speed-sensitive power steering system and four-wheel ventilated power disc brakes. The front and rear of the vehicle have stabilizer bars. The BMW 3 Series also includes a double-pivot strut front suspension with electronic brake proportioning, cornering and braking stability enhancement, dynamic brake control, brake fade compensation, brake standby, brake drying, start-off assistance, and dynamic traction control. A five-link rear suspension with coil springs also improves the vehicle. The BMW 3 features an engine start and stop button and electronic throttle control.

Safety

The 3 Series earns an above average rating on safety, receiving four stars for driver and passenger front-impact and rollover protection and five stars for driver and passenger protection in side-impact collisions. The 2008 BMW 3 Series has the standard four-wheel anti-lock brake system, dual front two-stage airbags with an occupant sensor and an indicator light, front side-impact airbags, and active knee protection airbags. Other features include a rollover protection system, an interlocking door anchoring system, crushable pedals and footrest, advanced crash safety management, a crash sensor with automatic door unlock and activation of hazard and interior lights, emergency trunk release, and daytime running lights.
