2013 BMW 3-Series Review

Reviewed by Automotive on

The 2013 BMW 3-Series is newly redesigned and ready to help you take on the road in style. The 3-Series features some of the biggest sellers in the BMW line and offers plenty to choose from. The 3-Series a bit more expensive than the 1-Series vehicles from BMW, especially if you opt for one of the premium trim packages, but with BMW, you get what you pay for. There’s a BMW 3-Series vehicle for just about every type of driver and every type of driving need. You’ve got the base 328i or the 335i available as a convertible, coupe, or sedan, with four-wheel-drive coupe and sedan models and the 335is as convertible or coupe. For the energy conscious, there’s the ActiveHybrid 3, and for those who need a family-size vehicle, the redesigned 3281 wagon may be the perfect fit. The BMW 3-Series has a classic look and a great safety reputation. With the Sport, Luxury, Modern, and M Sport trim styles, there’s probably a model to meet your needs, whether you’re looking for an emphasis on luxury, sportiness, comfort, or a combination of all three.

New For 2013

The big new addition to the BMW 3-Series line in 2013 is the fully redesigned 328i wagon. BMW makes one of the most popular sport wagons on the market, and the 2013 328i wagon is looking to build on that reputation in a big way. Look for useful improvements such as:

  • Longer, wider body
  • Better fuel economy
  • More interior space
  • More aggressive styling

Exterior

The 2013 BMW 3-Series features a long, sculpted body with the classic kidney style grille. The sleek look includes body color mirrors and front and rear bumpers, tinted glass, and an alloy look with the Luxury package. You’ll find 225/45R H run flat tires (18” V-Spoke light alloy wheels optional), rain-sensing windshield wipers, and optional automatic high beams. Chrome exhaust tips complete the 3-Series’ distinctive look. The convertible features a power retractable hard top, with a moonroof optional on other models. Body colors include Alpine White, Black Sapphire Metallic, Blue Metallic, Titanium Silver Metallic, and Crimson Red.

Interior & Cargo

You’ll know you’re in a BMW when you slip behind the wheel of one of the BMW 3-Series automobiles. The 328i features power everything, including 10-way power front bucket seats, a power rear seat for easy access, and speed sensitive power steering and a tilt and telescopic steering wheel with audio and cruise controls on the wheel. The cabin exudes luxury, with wood trim everywhere, a leather and alloy steering wheel, dual zone climate controls and a high-tech iDrive trip computer. You’ll find 13 cu. ft. of cargo space, and if your hands are always full of groceries, you may want to opt for the optional Comfort Access Hands-Free Trunk Opening feature, which allows you to open the trunk just by kicking your foot underneath.

Safety

The 2013 BMW 3-Series safety features a range of safety equipment, including a top-notch braking system, which includes four-wheel ventilated disc brakes, ABS, cornering brake control, a brake assist system and electronic brake distribution, a full airbag system that includes front and rear head airbags, dual front side-mounted airbags and front knee airbags, a supplemental restraint system to prevent unnecessary airbag deployment, and seatbelt pretensioners. You’ll also find the LATCH system for child seats, along with rear door child safety locks. Other safety equipment includes an alarm and engine immobilizer, a rearview camera, tire pressure monitoring and park distance control.

Driving Experience

Under the hood, you’ll find, linked to a six-speed manual or an eight-speed automatic transmission, a turbocharged, 2.0-liter, 240 horsepower engine in the 328i, providing 255 lb-ft of torque and getting you from zero to 60 in less than six seconds. You’ll also enjoy the great fuel economy with the 328i, 23/34 mpg city/highway. If you’re looking for more power, go for the 335i with a turbocharged, 3.0-liter, six-cylinder engine that delivers 300 horses and an average of 33 mpg on the highway. And if it’s great control you’re after, you’ll want one of the xDrive all-wheel-drive models, available as coupe or sedan. Exciting efficiency features include auto start-stop technology, which turns the engine off while you’re idling to save energy, electronically controlled engine cooling and driving dynamics, and electronic throttle control. You’ll also experience top-notch handling with dynamic stability control, twin tube gas pressure shock absorbers, Servotronic power assist, and dynamic traction control.
