Overview

The 2000 BMW 5-Series is a rear-drive, four-door luxury sedan that is offered in a stellar choice of sedans and sport wagons. Exterior

The 2000 BMW 5-Series has approximately a 188-inch length, 71-inch width, 56-inch height and 111-inch wheelbase. The exterior features vary depending on the model. The 5-Series features body-colored bumpers in the front and rear, chrome trim on the bumpers, around the side windows, and side of body, chrome grille slats, heated power door mirrors, heated door locks, front fog lights, programmable daytime running lights, and a one-touch power glass sunroof. There is a solar-reflective windshield and tinted glass on the cabin. The 5-Series weighs 3495 pounds and sits on 17-inch alloy wheels.

Interior

The interior of the 2000 BMW 5-Series is roomy enough to comfortably fit five passengers. Features vary depending on the model. In the front, there are 10-way power-adjustable leather bucket seats divided by an armrest/storage console. There are pockets in the doors for easy storage. In the dash, there are logically-arranged gauges that can be read easily and conveniently located controls. In the rear, there is a leather bench seat that fits three people. The 5-Series features a leather-wrapped four-spoke steering wheel, cup holders and reading lights in the front and rear, automatic climate control, power locks, one-touch power windows, and an AM/FM stereo with a cassette player included and 10 speakers, and pre-wiring for a CD changer and cellular phone.

Performance & Handling

The BMW 5-Series 528i comes packed with a 2.8-liter, six-cylinder engine that produces 193 horsepower and 206 lb-ft of torque. It is mated with either a five-speed manual or five-speed automatic transmission. The 540i wagons and sedans have a 4.4-liter, V-8 engine that pumps out 282 horsepower and 324 lb-ft of torque. It is combined with either a five speed automatic or five or six-speed manual. The 5-Series is built with an independent strut front suspension with a stabilizer bar and coil springs teamed with an independent multi-link rear suspension with a stabilizer bar and coil springs. This setup provides for an exceptionally smooth and stable ride. Superb handling allows drivers to maneuver gracefully in traffic and take corners with ease. Steering has a good feel, allowing for precise control.

Safety

The 2000 BMW 5-Series is equipped with anti-lock brakes on all four wheels and traction control for improved handling. There are driver and front passenger front-impact and front side-impact airbags installed. Rear side-impact airbags are optional. Child safety door locks are integrated into the rear doors.
