2001 BMW 5-Series Review

A BMW with something for everyone.

Reviewed by Automotive on

Overview

The 2001 BMW 5 Series offers a medium between the most expensive models offered by BMW and the cheaper and less powerful iterations. While the 2001 BMW 5 Series does not offer a lot of features or speed in comparison to its more expensive sibling, it still puts out some serious horsepower and offers comfort and luxury. The 2001 BMW 5 Series definitely looks like a BMW in all aspects, and it carries a moderate price compared to other BMWs.

The BMW 5 Series provides a well-rounded, midsize luxury sedan with a solid reputation for reliability and power.

The Range

Body Styles: sedan, wagon
Engines: 2.5-liter six-cylinder, 3.0-liter six-cylinder, 4.4-liter eight-cylinder
Transmissions: five-speed manual, six-speed manual, five-speed automatic
Models: BMW 525i, BMW 530i, BMW 540i

What's New

A number of new additions come with the 2001 BMW 5 Series. The 2.8-liter, six-cylinder increases to a three-liter displacement. Also, a 2.5-liter provides a gas-saving option, although some power loss results. BMW also offers better equipment such as a larger LCD screen for the navigation system, Park Distance Control, and an improved CD player.

Exterior

The 2001 BMW 5 Series’ exterior looks absolutely beautiful on both the sedan and wagon models. Both seem relatively large, with the sedan coming in at 188 inches by 70.9 inches by 56.5 inches and the wagon model coming in at 189.2 inches by 70.9 inches by 56.7 inches. Both models include the same basic features such as heated power windows, a rear defogger, variable intermittent wipers, and a diversity antenna. The wagon also comes with a roof rack for transporting different items.

Interior

The inside of the 5 Series looks as functional and beautiful as the exterior in both the sedan and wagon models. Both the wagon and the sedan offer ample head and legroom with 38.7 inches and 41.7 inches, respectively. Of course, both versions of the 2001 BMW 5 Series also come with a number of interior functions including one-touch power windows, cruise control, variable power steering, cabin air filtration, and air-conditioning.

Performance & Handling

The 2001 BMW 5 Series offers a medium between the 3 Series and the 7 Series. The three different engines provide different torque and horsepower ratings. The 2.5-liter, six-cylinder engine puts out 175 lb-ft of torque and 184 horsepower, the lowest available power level. The three-liter six-cylinder puts out 214 lb-ft of torque and 225 horsepower, making it the medium-powered engine of the set. The 4.4-liter, eight-cylinder engine puts out 324 lb-ft of torque and 282 horsepower, making it the most powerful of the three engines

All three engine levels come with only one handling feature: the four-wheel independent suspension. While this provides the only handling feature, many of the features classified as ?safety features? enable exceptional handling as well. For example, four-wheel anti-lock brakes (ABS) provide exceptional stopping power compared to vehicles that lack ABS.

Safety

Barring the anti-lock brakes, all of the vehicles classified in the 2001 BMW 5 Series include a number of safety features. For example, the 5 Series includes front head and side airbags, emergency braking assist, and electronic brake force distribution.

EPA Fuel Economy

BMW 525i: 18/27 mpg city/highway
BMW 530i: 18/27 mpg city/highway
BMW 540i: 16/22 mpg city/highway
