2007 BMW 5-Series Review

Another class leader from BMW with very few flaws.

Reviewed by Automotive on

Overview

The 2007 BMW 5 Series offerings carry on the tradition of well-designed and built midsize cars that perfectly marry performance and luxury. The interior is impeccable, and the ride is truly comfortable without the slightest sacrifice in performance. Even though there is stiff competition in the luxury-sport midsize car class, the 5 Series is a leader due to its lack of flaws and outstanding quality. For buyers willing to pay the price, there is no better example of sport and luxury, even in this distinguished segment.

The Range

Body Styles: sedan, wagon
Engines: 3.0-liter six-cylinder, 4.8-liter V-8
Transmissions: six-speed manual standard, six-speed Steptronic automatic, sequential manual gearbox (SMG)
Models: BMW 525i, 525xi, 530i, 530xi, 550i sedan, 530i wagon

What's New

For 2007, the BMW 5 Series only receives additional gear for changes. A four-year subscription to BMW Assist, a communications system that automatically contacts your BMW dealer when needing service, is now standard. There's now an auxiliary input jack for MP3 players and optional high-definition radio. The Sport package now has a new steering wheel design and 20-way adjustable multi-contour front seats. BMW's Night Vision system uses a thermal imaging camera to detect obstacles up to 1000 feet in front of the car and is optional on all 5 Series cars.

Exterior

The 2007 BMW 5 Series is available as a sedan or wagon. The sedan comes in 525i, 525xi, 530i, 530xi, and 550i models, while the wagon has the 530xi trim only. Rain-sensing windshield wipers, heated mirrors, and the iDrive vehicle management system are standard on all 5 Series models. Adaptive bi-xenon headlights and a night-vision system are optional on all models. The Sport package upgrades to a selection of wheel/run-flat tires that goes up to 18 inches in diameter, Active Roll Stabilization, and firmer suspension tuning.

Interior

On all 5 Series trims, standard equipment includes automatic climate control, a CD player, one-touch power windows, ten-way power front seats, and Leatherette upholstery. Twenty-way power seats, a DVD-based navigation system with voice command and adaptive cruise control are optional. Buyers can upgrade from the standard audio system to get a glove box-mounted CD/DVD changer as well as a premium-grade Harman Kardon Logic 7 sound system. Active Front Steering (AFS) is available for all 5 Series cars. The 550i gets standard leather.

The interior is spacious, luxurious, and comfortable with the finest build and material quality. While great interiors are common to this segment, the 5 Series cabins still stand out.

Performance & Handling

The 525 models use a three-liter inline six-cylinder that generates 215 hp and 185 lb-ft of torque. The 530 models have a more powerful version of this six that makes 255 hp and 220 lb-ft of torque. The 550i uses a 4.8-liter V-8 rated at 360 hp and 360 lb-ft of torque. All models come with a standard six-speed manual, while a six-speed Steptronic automatic is optional. The rear-drive 530i and 550i comes with BMW's sequential manual gearbox (SMG), a sophisticated transmission that combines manual control and automatic convenience. BMW's xDrive all-wheel-drive system is available on 525 and 530 sedans and standard on the wagon. Like all BMWs, the 5 Series offers serious performance.

Much has been said about BMW handling and driving quality, the 5 Series continues these traditions. The 5 Series cars are class leaders for athletic handling and top-notch performance. Power and performance are reasons why the BMW offerings in any given segment are the priciest. Some cars in this segment will offer as much quality, features, or luxury, but none match the drive quality of the 5 Series.

Safety

The 5 Series won awards for safety thanks to standard safety equipment like Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) and four-wheel disc brakes with electronic brake proportioning, cornering and stability enhancements, plus a flat-tire monitor. The collection of airbags includes a head protection system and torso-protecting side-impact airbags for the front seats. Rear-seat side airbags are optional as are active front head restraints and Advanced Safety Electronics (ASE) that govern the deployment of safety systems. Both Hill-Start Assist and Hill Descent Control are standard on all-wheel drive models. Run-flat tires are available.
