Performance & Handling
The 525 models use a three-liter inline six-cylinder that generates 215 hp and 185 lb-ft of torque. The 530 models have a more powerful version of this six that makes 255 hp and 220 lb-ft of torque. The 550i uses a 4.8-liter V-8 rated at 360 hp and 360 lb-ft of torque. All models come with a standard six-speed manual, while a six-speed Steptronic automatic is optional. The rear-drive 530i and 550i comes with BMW's sequential manual gearbox (SMG), a sophisticated transmission that combines manual control and automatic convenience. BMW's xDrive all-wheel-drive system is available on 525 and 530 sedans and standard on the wagon. Like all BMWs, the 5 Series offers serious performance.
Much has been said about BMW handling and driving quality, the 5 Series continues these traditions. The 5 Series cars are class leaders for athletic handling and top-notch performance. Power and performance are reasons why the BMW offerings in any given segment are the priciest. Some cars in this segment will offer as much quality, features, or luxury, but none match the drive quality of the 5 Series.
The 5 Series won awards for safety thanks to standard safety equipment like Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) and four-wheel disc brakes with electronic brake proportioning, cornering and stability enhancements, plus a flat-tire monitor. The collection of airbags includes a head protection system and torso-protecting side-impact airbags for the front seats. Rear-seat side airbags are optional as are active front head restraints and Advanced Safety Electronics (ASE) that govern the deployment of safety systems. Both Hill-Start Assist and Hill Descent Control are standard on all-wheel drive models. Run-flat tires are available.
