The 2008 BMW 5 Series gets new six-cylinder engines this year. Also new for this year, BMW redesigns the front air dam, headlight lenses, and LED taillights.
The BMW 5 Series comes in 10 different colors. The exterior features include a two-way power tilt and slide moonroof with one-touch open and close features, an anti-trapping feature, a sliding sunshade, and an open and close feature on the exterior lock. The bumpers match the body color while the side window trim is chrome and matte-black. All models include automatic, halogen headlights and freeform fog lights. Daytime running lights make the vehicle visible at all times, and the brake lights adapt. The power heated mirrors match the body color and adjust with two-position mirror memory. The rain-sensing windshield wipers include an articulated passenger-side wiper arm, single wipe control, and heated washer jets. The 17-inch star spoke alloy wheels include all-season tires for any month of the year. The 535 models include xenon adaptive headlights, and the 550i comes with park distance control for parking assistance.
The 2008 BMW 5 Series offers a variety of interior features and options. The main interior features include a leatherette seat trim, 10-way power front bucket seats, leather-trimmed two-level center console compartments with a climate-controlled lower compartment, an adjustable front armrest, and a fold-up rear armrest. Other features include a leather-wrapped, power, tilt and telescoping steering wheel with auto tilt, audio controls, cruise controls, Bluetooth phone controls, and two-position memory, along with an electronic analog speedometer and a tachometer with a variable warning segment, LCD main and trip odometers, a tire pressure monitor, power windows, a central locking system, remote keyless entry, BMW Assistance, the iDrive system, and power trunk release. The 5 Series comes with a three-liter, six-cylinder engine; a 4.8-liter, V-8 engine; or a five-liter, V-10 engine. The 528i and 528xi get 230 horsepower, which provides for 200 lb-ft of torque. The 535i, 535xi, and the 535xiT produce 300 lb-ft of torque. The 550i rates at 360 horsepower and produces 360 lb-ft of torque. The M5 generates 500 horsepower and 383 lb-ft of torque. BMW offers an option between a six-speed manual and a six-speed automatic transmission. The vehicle uses rear drive or all-wheel drive depending on the model chosen. The 2008 BMW 5 Series has an aluminum double-pivot strut-type front suspension and an aluminum four-link integral rear suspension. Twin-tube gas pressure shock absorbers come standard as well. The front and rear have aluminum subframes and stabilizer bars. The 5 Series includes four-wheel ventilated disc brakes, a dual exhaust system, and Dynamic Stability Control.
The 2008 BMW 5 Series earns five stars for driver and passenger side-impact protection and passenger front-impact protection. It also gets four stars for its rollover rating and three stars for driver front-impact protection. The four-wheel anti-lock brake system remains standard, as well as an Intelligent Safety and Info System. The BMW 5 gets driver and front-passenger dual threshold dual-stage airbags with a passenger deployment sensor, front and rear head protection airbags, and front side-impact airbags. The child seat LATCH attachments protect children in the rear seats, and the rear doors have child safety locks. Models also include an interlocking door anchoring system, a battery safety terminal, and an impact sensor.
