2013 BMW ActiveHybrid 3 Review
Reviewed by Automotive on
The 2013 BMW ActiveHybrid 3 is a high-performance compact sedan that provides fuel-sipping tendencies without sacrificing on legendary German performance. No corners are cut and all the amenities consumers would expect from BWM are present in the ActiveHybrid 3. The new 3-Series hybrid is a burner of rubber, a turner of heads, and a forbearer of designs to come from BMW, as the company positions itself to address the increasingly electrifying expectations of modern motorists. The ActiveHybrid series is by no means a replacement for BMW's conventional-engine cars; rather, it is more of a bridge to new, lower-emission models that will carry on the company's vision of what it means to deliver ?The Ultimate Driving Machine.?
New For 2013
The BMW ActiveHybrid 3 is all-new for 2013. Some highlights of this new model include:
- True hybrid drivetrain supporting convention, electric, or combined operation
- Improved gas mileage up to 39 mpg, estimated
- Advanced safety features
- Harman Kardon surround sound, 8.8-inch screened Infotainment center featuring satellite navigation, apps, internet connectivity, Bluetooth, and iPod integration
The 2013 BMW ActiveHybrid 3 is virtually identical to the 335i, which also shares the same chassis. The styling of the ActiveHybrid 3 is modern-classic BMW. Enduring features, such as the kidney grille and the iconic silhouette of the body, illustrate that the ActiveHybrid cars do not represent a departure for BMW, but instead symbolize a natural evolution that brings the automaker into the future, while paying homage to its past. Chrome trim and Hybrid badges further separate the ActiveHybrid 3 from the 335i, and little else in the way of visual differentiation is found between the two models. The short, front overhang and elegantly sloping roofline modernize this hybrid’s aesthetics. The 2013 BMW ActiveHybrid 3's 17-inch alloy wheels sport Pirelli P7 Cinturato run-flat tires, with 18-inch wheels as an available option. The famed M and M-sport packages are available to the ActiveHybrid 3, adding optional touches, such as satin-finished aluminum window surrounds, matte black exhaust pipes, and high-gloss black side panels.
Interior & Cargo
Standard leatherette upholstery, cruise control, and eight-speaker surround sound are all included in the base model. Other standard amenities include steering wheel-mounted audio controls, power seating with memory positions, and keyless starting. The 8.8-inch iDrive display provides navigation, stereo control, and infotainment. AM/FM radio with MP3-capable CD player and digital radio are also included. With seating for up to five, the cabin of the 2013 BMW ActiveHybrid 3 features 40.3-inches of front headroom and 37.7-inches of rear headroom. The functional design concept of the hybrid's trunk offers enough room for plenty of cargo while concealing the car's lithium-ion battery underneath.
The 2013 BMW ActiveHybrid 3 is well-equipped with state-of-the-art safety features. The BMW Head-Up Display allows the driver to concentrate on driving by providing continual information projected onto the windshield. Data, including current speed and speed limit, lane departure warnings, and directional indicators, can be shown comfortably within the driver's field of vision.
Other safety equipment includes traffic sign recognition, emergency call, and electronic system measurement for engine, tires, and brakes. Active Protection features come in the form of automatically tensioning seat belts, as well as windows and a sunroof that automatically close in if a potential accident is detected. A front camera and front radar help with collision avoidance. Passive safety features include high-resistance cross-members, high-strength body panels, and a front-mounted shock absorber.
The 2013 BMW ActiveHybrid 3 features a 3.0-liter, turbocharged, six-cylinder engine with variable valve timing. The conventional engine is paired to a 55-hp electric motor in place of a conventional torque converter. The combined power of the gasoline and electric motors give the 2013 BMW ActiveHybrid 3 up to 340-horsepower, making this compact sedan a hybrid-engine powerhouse. The engine is paired to an eight-speed automatic transmission. The switch between electric, gasoline, and hybrid power is most often imperceptible. Running on electric power alone, the vehicle can travel up to 2.5 miles and maintain an average speed of 47 mph. The 2013 ActiveHybrid 3 can also coast at speeds of up to 100 mph in power-saving EV-only mode. In all cases, the engine will switch to and from gasoline practically without shudder or startup noise. Rear-wheel drive, an Anti-lock-Braking System, and stability control allow this hybrid to ride smoothly and handle aptly. The increased curb weight over its relative, the 335i, make the ActiveHybrid 3 only slightly more lofty during in-town motoring. Overall, the ActiveHybrid 3 drives, handles, and looks like the kind of sedan one would expect from BMW.
