2013 BMW ActiveHybrid 5 Review

Reviewed by Automotive on

Based on the BMW 535i sedan, the 2013 BMW ActiveHybrid 5 is the 5-Series’ answer to energy conscious, fuel efficient, luxury hybrid vehicles. The BMW ActiveHybrid 5 employs a lithium-ion battery that gives a healthy boost to the engine and improves fuel economy in a variety of ways. This is a BMW hybrid; a hybrid that doesn’t sacrifice anything. It has power, looks, and performance. Whether you’re looking at the ActiveHybrid 5 from the outside or you’re sitting in the driver’s seat, all you see and feel is a top of the line BMW with all the benefits of a hybrid vehicle, including great fuel economy and significantly reduced fuel emissions. If you’ve been looking for a hybrid with the style and performance of a BMW sedan, the ActiveHybrid 5 is made for you. Option packages for the ActiveHybrid 5 include the Luxury Seating package, Cold Weather package, Technology Package, and Sport Package.

New For 2013

There are no new features for the BMW ActiveHybrid 5 in 2013, as this innovative hybrid model only rolled off the shelves two years earlier. However, some of the highlights of the BMW ActiveHybrid 5 include:

  • Electric motor with Lithium-Ion Battery
  • iDrive control system
  • Turbocharged, 3.0-liter engine

The 2013 BMW ActiveHybrid 5 is part of the BMW 5-Series, and the exterior is indistinguishable from that of the BMW 535i. When it comes to the ActiveHybrid 5, it’s all about what’s under the hood. Like the 535i, the Active Hybrid 5 exterior offers a power glass sunroof with remote operation, soft-close automatic doors, classic BMW styling with chrome kidney grill, and bi-xenon adaptive headlights with automatic high beams. The ActiveHybrid 5 comes with over a dozen exterior color options, including Alpine White, Deep Sea Blue Metallic, and Jet Black.

Interior & Cargo

The 2013 BMW ActiveHybrid 5 has all the luxurious touches you expect in a BMW interior, including 18-way power bucket front seats, a 3D navigation computer with voice control, BMW assist telematics, leather upholstery, and leather trim on the tilt/telescoping power steering wheel, which also features controls for the audio system. The BMW iDrive system helps you manage everything on a 10.25-inch HD display, including controls for CD, radio and MP3s, telephone, navigation, vehicle information, and BMW Assist. The iDrive is even integrated with Google, allowing the driver to access necessary search functions while traveling. There are also some terrific rear seat entertainment options, with high resolution monitors for rear seat viewing, not to mention a 16 speaker premium surround sound system. The ActiveHybrid 5 has power everything, memorized driver settings, and offers 40.5 inches of front headroom with 41.4 inches of front leg room. With all seats in place, the BMW Active Hybrid 5 provides 13.2 cubic ft. of cargo space.

One safety feature of the 2013 BMW ActiveHybrid 5 that’s also very convenient is the optional Head-Up Display. With this feature, important information that you need on the go, like current speed and directions, is projected right onto the windshield, so you never have to take your eyes off the road to get the info you need when you need it. Other safety features of the ActiveHybrid 5 that you’ll appreciate include an intelligent airbag system, an optional infrared night vision camera that points out potential hazards in the dark before they pose a danger to you on the road, active blind spot detection that detects cars in your blind spot using radar and alerts you with a light on your side view mirror, and a rear-view camera to help you park and avoid obstacles when backing up. You’ll also find a wide array of safety features to protect you and your vehicle every day, like a four-wheel Anti-lock Braking System, stability and traction control, electronic brake force distribution, and for family driving, rear door child safety locks, and child seat anchors.

Driving Experience

The 2013 BMW ActiveHybrid 5 has the power you might not expect in a typical hybrid, with a TwinPower, turbocharged, 3.0-liter, six-cylinder engine that provides 335 horsepower and 330 lb-ft of torque with the combustion engine and electric motor combined. This engine linked to an eight-speed automatic steptronic transmission that allows you to enjoy the power and performance of the standard 535i (zero-60 mph in under six seconds), with dramatically lower fuel consumption and C02 emissions. If you’ve never driven a hybrid before, you’ll marvel at the quietness of the ride, especially when idling, as BMW’s auto start/stop system automatically turns off the engine when stopped to save fuel. Fuel economy is of course a big selling point for the ActiveHybrid 5, which averages 23/30 mpg city/highway.
