2021 BMW M4 MODEL OVERVIEW

Pros

  • Actually usable back seat
  • Six-speed manual transmission standard
  • Racetrack-ready Competition model

Cons

  • Unending jokes about the grille
  • Plain interior design
  • Infotainment could be improved

Just like its M3 counterpart, the M4 showcases the latest in BMW's motorsport-derived performance. Behind its gaping grille is a twin-turbo I-6, linking the M4 to classic BMWs of the past. At the same time it's a step into the future, as it's packed with technology intended to aid drivers on the street and track. As ever, the M4 looks to raise the bar among compact sport luxury coupes while providing more excitement than the luxurious M440i.

Does BMW Make an M4 Convertible?

Carving canyons with the wind in your hair—what could be better? The standard 4 Series convertible has been revealed, and it makes the switch to a fabric soft top from the prior folding hardtop setup. It's yet unknown whether the M4 convertible will be offered with the 503-hp Competition package, but it should be an open-air thriller even with the standard 473-hp engine.

Performance

In its standard tune, the M4's S58 twin-turbo 3.0-liter I-6 produces 473 hp and 406 lb-ft of torque. That output hits the rear wheels through a six-speed manual or eight-speed automatic transmission. BMW estimates the M4's 0-60 time at 4.1 seconds.

The M4 Competition features the same engine, but tuned to 503 hp and 479 lb-ft of torque. An eight-speed automatic is the only transmission choice, but buyers can choose between an RWD or AWD setup. The M4 Competition should hit 60 mph in about 3.8 seconds.

Safety

Standard driver-assist and active safety features include blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, lane-departure warning, and automatic high-beams. Adaptive cruise control, lane-keep assist, emergency evasive steering, and automatic braking are optional extras.

Cargo Space and Interior Room

Trunk capacity measures 12.0 cubic feet, with a split-folding second-row seat to expand storage into the cabin.

Front-row headroom measures 40.3 inches in the M4, which compares to 39.0 inches in the Audi RS 5. Second-row headroom is 35.8 inches in the M4, close to the RS 5's 36.1 inches. Front-row legroom measures 41.7 inches in the BMW, a bit more than the Audi's 41.3 inches. Second-row legroom is 34.7 inches in the M4, more spacious than the 32.7 inches in the RS 5.

Technology

The M4 features a 10.3-inch infotainment touchscreen loaded with BMW's latest iDrive interface. Built-in navigation is included, along with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. A 12.3-inch digital gauge display is fitted, which has performance readouts specific to M cars. A head-up display is on the options list. USB ports in both rows are standard, and a wireless charging pad is available. The M4 comes equipped with a Harman Kardon premium audio system.

What Is the BMW M4 Competition Package?

Even in standard form the M4 should offer thrilling performance, but the Competition package turns things up further. The M4 Competition gets a more powerful engine tune, which increases horsepower from 473 to 503 and torque from 406 to 479 lb-ft. Additionally a transmission oil cooler is added to support longer sessions on track. Unlike the standard RWD M4, the M4 Competition is available with AWD.

The M4 Competition isn't only quicker—it looks like it, too. That's thanks to 1-inch-larger wheels measuring 19 inches up front and 20 inches in the back, black exhaust finishers, and other black exterior trim. Classic M color stripes are woven into the seat belts. Choosing the Competition package precludes the standard M4's six-speed manual transmission, but paddle shifters for the automatic are included. BMW offers a catalog of add-on parts to take performance (or the look of performance) even higher.
