Originally introduced as a smaller, more affordable version of the popular X5, the X3 has carved out its own niche as a practical yet performance-oriented means of transport for owners who'd like to take a little more gear along when they take to the road. The 2009 X3 mid-size SUV is a carryover design from 2008.
The resemblance to its larger sibling is obvious; the twin kidney shaped front grille and aggressive stance have been mainstays of the vehicle's design since it joined the BMW line up. Built on the platform of the previous generation 3 series sedans, the X3 carries 5 passengers and still has enough room for 30 cubic feet of cargo space. Along with the performance heritage comes four-wheel independent suspension and an all wheel drive system that is designed to be as comfortable challenging snow covered back roads as it is angling into a parking space downtown.
The single engine offered is a 3.0-liter inline six that generates 260 horsepower and 225 pound feet of torque. Keeping with the sporting ambience of the midsize SUV, BMW delivers the X3 with a six speed manual gearbox standard and the option of a six-speed Steptronic sequential automatic. Both setups send power to full time all wheel drive.
Fuel economy for the X3 ranges from 18 miles per gallon city, 26 miles per gallon highway.
Also befitting a vehicle with performance inclinations, large four wheel vented disc brakes with ABS are standard as are Dynamic Stability Control and performance shock absorbers.
The X3 comes with 17-inch alloys and all season radial tires standard with various performance wheel/tire packages optional.
Our test car's standard leatherette was upgraded to optional leather with wood trim. Airbags throughout do their part to insure safety. Premium features like high end audio, navigation system and a unique glass roof window abound. Passengers front and rear are treated to plenty of space for a comfortable ride. The 60/40 split rear seats can be configured in a variety of ways to make best use of the up to 71 cubic feet of cargo space.
Base MSRP for the 2009 BMW X3 is $39,400, in its only available trim. With full options, the price can climb past $50,000. The X3 is backed by a 4-year, 50,000-mile powertrain warranty.
The Austrian-built 2009 BMW X3 delivers all the quality, comfort and performance that you've come to expect in a BMW. It's a sports ACTIVITY vehicle that is truly...fun to drive...
