Transmissions: eight-speed shiftable automatic

What's New

The BMW X3 is completely redesigned in 2011, from an extended body frame that provides more room, to a new engine that provides more power and better handling; improving the ride for driver and passengers alike.

The exterior has been extended, resulting in additional passenger and cargo space. Standard 2011 BMW X3 xDrive 28i equipment includes 17-inch alloy wheels with run flat tires, variable intermittent rain-sensing wipers, aluminum satin roof rails, power liftgate, fixed liftgate window, rear liftgate door, panoramic moonroof, automatic high beams, xenon headlights, daytime running lights, engine immobilizer, fog lights, dusk-sensing headlights, and a rear defogger.

2011 BMW X3 xDrive 28i standard equipment includes speed-proportional power steering, power brakes, power windows and door locks, power heated mirrors, cruise control, front and rear cup holders, tilt/telescoping leather-wrapped steering wheel with audio and cruise functions, eight-way power driver and passenger seats with height adjustment, leatherette upholstery, split-folding rear seatback, 12-volt power outlets, and a 205-watt AM/FM/CD/MP3 audio system with 12 speakers.

Optional equipment includes a heated steering wheel, satellite radio, Smartphone integration, heated front seats, keyless entry, rear manual side window shades, navigation system, BMW Assist, premium audio system and Nevada leather upholstery. You can also purchase adapters for your iPhone/iPod or BlackBerry, and store them in the center console. Wireless capability and Bluetooth can make your Smartphone completely hands-free. BMW apps for your Smartphone can let you access navigation system results before you even get into your vehicle. The X3 is also equipped with an 80GB hard drive, storing the Electronic Owner’s Manual, navigation system, saved maps, and entertainment server, so you can upload music, photos and files from CD and DVD reader or USB port.

Performance & Handling

The xDrive 28i is equipped with a three-liter, 240 hp, six-cylinder engine and an eight-speed shiftable automatic transmission. The 2011 BMW X3’s suspension has been redesigned to provide a softer ride; the all-wheel drive is more responsive in turns. If consumers want a higher performance engine, the xDrive35i has a more powerful turbocharged engine to get them to their destination in style and comfort.

The xDrive all-wheel-drive system is built with rear wheel bias for excellent grip on slick roads. It sends power to the wheel or wheels with the surest footing within milliseconds. Under normal conditions, drive forces are spread out evenly. But if the system senses wheel slippage, torque is shifted to meet the road conditions, improving traction, and handling on all road surfaces.

Electronic Damping Control (EDC) lets consumers switch between Normal, Sport or Sport Plus gear settings by pushing a button. Sensors calculate the best setting for each independent wheel, adjusting suspension as appropriate.

The 2011 BMW X3 rates high in safety. Standard safety equipment includes a four-wheel Anti-lock Braking System (ABS), front and rear head airbags, dual front side-mounted airbags, remote anti-theft alarm system, emergency braking assist, stability control, traction control, electronic brake force distribution, full-length side curtain airbags, active front-seat head restraints, anti-lock disc brakes, automatic brake drying, center limited slip differential, brake hill holder, rear-view camera, park distance control, and hill descent control.
