The popular BMW X3 has been refreshed for the 2022 model year, featuring new designs and a raft of new standard content. The line's plug-in hybrid goes the way of the dodo, but BMW adds a mild hybrid system in the M40i AWD. In BMW's large lineup of SUVs, the X3 fits in size and price above the X1 and X2 but below the X4 and X5.
The X3 was a 2020 SUV of the Year contender and knows how to party. It's fast, predictable, and even capable of drifting. The X3 doesn't have a dedicated off-road mode, but it still showed plenty of ability when we took it away from pavement. Hop in the X3 M for the full high-performance experience, complete with a raucous soundtrack of gurgles coming out of the exhaust off throttle.
It may not look as good as some other SUVs in the segment, and under certain circumstances, we found the transmission to be rough and suspension not as compliant, especially at speed on choppy road surfaces. We also found drive modes to be complicated, but the cabin shines with premium interior materials and comfortable seating. We also appreciated the X3's power-folding second row seats and ample cargo space.
BMW changed up the X3's powertrain options for 2022 by doing away with the xDrive30e plug-in hybrid trim but also adding a mild hybrid system to the M40i. The setup contributes power to both the vehicle's 12-volt electrical system and its drivetrain, providing up to an 11 hp boost during acceleration on top of the 382 hp made by the M40i's 3.0-liter turbocharged I-6. The six-cylinder is also what motivates the 473-hp X3 M and 503-hp X3 M Competition.
The X3 sDrive30i and xDrive30i both utilize a 248-hp 2.0-liter I-4. All 2022 X3 models feature an eight-speed automatic transmission, and the sDrive30i is the only standard RWD option. The X3 M, M Competition, xDrive30i, and M40i all come standard with AWD.
We expect the 2022 BMW X3 will achieve good safety scores like the 2021 model. NHTSA tested only the 2021 X3 sDrive30i and xDrive30i and not the X3 M, M Competition, and M40i. The base RWD and AWD models each earned a five-star overall safety rating, the administration's highest grade. The IIHS gave the 2021 X3 generally Good scores except for its headlights and child seat anchors, which each received a rating of Marginal.
The X3 features standard automatic emergency braking, cruise control that slows for curves, lane departure warning, blind-spot monitoring, and adaptive LED headlights with automatic high beams. Adaptive cruise control and lane-keep assist are added with the Driving Assistance Professional package.
The X3 provides 40.3 inches of front legroom and 36.4 inches of rear legroom. It's less than the Acura RDX's 42 and 38 inches or the Buick Envision's 40.4 and 39.3 inches, respectively. The X3's cargo space behind the rear seats is greater than the Envision's, 28.7 cubic feet to the Buick's 25.2 cubic feet, but the Acura has them both beat, providing 29.5 cubic feet.
Features like front power sport seats and dual-zone climate control are newly standard for 2022, and Android Auto compatibility joins Apple CarPlay as a standard infotainment feature. The X3 in M40i trim picks up an adaptive M suspension, dual 12.3-inch digital displays (one for the instrument cluster and one for infotainment), keyless entry, and an increased top-speed limiter.
