Blending styling cues from its X Model series SUVs such as the grille, headlight treatment and sculpted body contours, with a roofline and c-pillar design clearly derived from its coupe line-up, BMW has created a look that it hopes will help define its latest offering; the X6 SAC (es ay see) or Sport Activity Coupe.
The four-door's short body-overhang, rounded wheel openings and a choice of up to six wheel/tire combinations contribute to the action-performance "look" BMW has created.
There are two engine choices: A 300 horsepower, twin-turbo, 3 Liter inline six like we had in our test xDrive 35i that develops 300 pound feet of torque, and a 400 horsepower V8 that produces 450 pound feet of torque if you opt for the xDrive 50i model. xDrive is BMW's unique four wheel drive system that modulates torque split front to rear. If wheel slip is detected by X6's computer, xDrive will react, sending power to the wheels with grip...automatically enhancing traction and controlling the vehicle.
Both engines route their power to the intelligent all-wheel-drive system via a 6-speed sport automatic transmission that can be shifted sequentially from the center mounted gear selector or steering wheel paddle-shifters...or can be left in the fully automatic mode.
Large 4-wheel ABS disc brakes are ventilated and are supported with a long list of electronic braking technologies that include automatic Stability, Corner and Hill Descent Controls.
EPA fuel estimates for the Inline 6 are 15 City/20 Highway with the V8 delivering somewhat less in each category.
Those familiar with the cabin architecture of BMW products will feel right at home behind the wheel of the X6. Leather upholstery, a power-adjustable steering wheel with radio and communications controls and an available "Heads Up" display for the many electronic systems such the premium sound, xDrive, back-up camera and navigation system are all standard BMW fare. And the split folding rear seats provide for up to 60 cubic feet of cargo space.
MSRP for the Base X6 35i is $52,500 but a fully optioned 50i could raise the sticker price to more than $80,000. A 4 year/50,000 mile warranty applies.
The X6: Something new from BMW: A blend of performance and style with a dash of off-road functionality.
