Not every SUV buyer is out for a mammoth vehicle with only its size and towing capacity going for it. Some are out for the excitement and ability of an SUV with the class and elegance of a coupe. For those people, it might be worth their time to take a look at the 2013 BMW X6. Uniquely designed as a coupe SUV crossover, this option gives high performance with plenty of good looks.
New For 2013
For the 2013 model year, BMW didn’t make a lot of changes to the X6, but interested buyers will want to note:
- Some changes to the standard and optional features
- Optional rear middle seat, upping the passenger capacity to five
The 2013 BMW X6 is a small crossover SUV that looks more like a BMW sedan or coupe than an SUV. This uniquely designed vehicle offers the classic German-made look most buyers are looking for in a BMW. The styling goes a bit further in the two available trim levels, with elevated ride height and attractive rugged styling. Unlike most SUVs, the X6 has a sloping roof line reminiscent of the styling noted on faster coupes and sedans. Additionally, doors and sides of the vehicle are sculpted for a modern, streamlined look. The front end and grille are assertive, with the easy-to-spot BMW logo located just above the grille. In either trim level, the total package rides around on 19-inch wheels. This SUV is more at home commuting, making an appearance at the country club, and highway driving than roughing it on back roads or off road.
Interior & Cargo
Inside the 2013 X6, there are plenty of examples of BMW’s attention to detail and use of quality materials. Overall, the front of the cabin is much like the X5, with easy-to-use gauges and gadgets along with dash. The X6 does differ from the X5 in one important way. It has a cushioned center console, designed to protect the driver’s and passenger’s knees during aggressive turns. It also has more supportive seats. The big difference between the two can be found in the back seat. The X6 is intended as a four person vehicle and offers less head room than its sibling. In models with only four seats, a solid rear center console is in place. For the most part, the rear seats are comfortable, but there is little option in terms of adjustment. While giving the X6 its sportier look, some sacrifices had to be made to the cargo capacity. Unlike most SUVs of its class, the 2013 BMW X6 only allows for 60 cubic feet of space. In the X5, there are 75 cubic feet available.
It won’t come as any great surprise that BMW added a wide variety of safety features to the X6. This vehicle is equipped with dynamic performance control, a specialty of BMW. This system includes enhanced traction and directional stability by shifting power to the vehicle’s individual wheels. The X6 is also equipped with traction and stability control, anti-lock brakes, and hill descent control. This SUV comes standard with active front head restraints, front side airbags, and side curtain airbags. The BMW assist emergency system is available as an option.
BMW has a reputation for producing fun-to-drive, high-precision vehicles. Regardless of the chosen powertrain, the X6 is more than capable of living up to the reputation. The X6 is available with two powertrain options. The first is a 3.0-liter, six-cylinder engine paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission. The engine offers a respectable 300 hp and 300 lb-ft of torque. Fuel economy comes in at 16/23 mpg city/highway.
The other powertrain option for the 2013 X6 is the 4.4-liter, V-8 engine coupled with an eight-speed automatic transmission as well. This powerful engine puts out 400 hp and 450 lb-ft of torque. This option’s fuel economy isn’t quite as good and comes in at 14/20 mpg city/highway.
As heavy as the X6 is and with as much size as it provides, it’s amazing how well this SUV performs. There is no denying that it is an exciting vehicle to drive and provides impressive performance on the highways, as well as the twists and turns of side roads. Acceleration isn’t a problem for either powertrain choice.
