Reviewed by Automotive on
The 2001 BMW Z3 provides one of the most fun cars available today. The two-seater has had a number of iterations since its introduction in 1996, but the 2001 BMW Z3 marks its best version yet. It shows a large power and torque increase over previous models. It comes fitted with several features that entice sports car enthusiasts.
The sleek Z3 also sells as either a convertible or a hatchback. It provides one of the smallest vehicles offered by BMW in 2001.
Engines: 2.5-liter six-cylinder, 3.0-liter six-cylinder
Transmissions: five-speed manual, four-speed automatic
Models: BMW Z3 convertible, BMW Z3 hatchback
The 2001 version of the Z3 comes with many new features. First of all, the three-liter inline six-cylinder upgrades from the 2.8-liter, inline six-cylinder engine to produce more torque and horsepower. Also, 17-inch wheels join the design as well as a five-speed Steptronic transmission with manual capability. Even the smaller 2.5-liter, inline six-cylinder engine gets redefined to pump out 15 extra horsepower.
The outside of the 2001 Z3 features a sleek and sporty style that impresses even the staunchest critics. The wheels on all models use alloy, with 17-inch tires for the three-liter convertible and hatchback and 16-inch tires for the 2.5-liter models. Exterior features for all models of the 2001 BMW Z3 include intermittent wipers, one-touch power windows, and a manual convertible roof (except on the hatchback). The Z3 measures 159.4 inches long by 68.5 inches wide by 50.9 inches high, a small footprint for such a zippy vehicle.
The inside of the 2001 Z3 comes fitted with many comfort and convenience features. It includes cruise control, speed-proportional power steering, air-conditioning, and adjustable bucket seats. Also, for a two-seater, the 2001 BMW Z3 comes with a decent amount of head and legroom (37.6 inches and 41.8 inches, respectively). Also, it includes a front console, cup holders, a clock, a tachometer, a leather steering wheel, and front door pockets. Finally, the 2001 Z3 includes 10 speakers and AM/FM radio capability.
Performance & Handling
As with most modern BMWs, the 2001 Z3 offers two powerful engine options that show increases in torque and horsepower. The horsepower of the 2.5-liter, inline six-cylinder engine increases to 184 while the torque also sees a gain to a total of 175 lb-ft. The three-liter inline six-cylinder also sees an increase to 225 horsepower and 214 lb-ft of torque. For better handling, the 2001 BMW Z3 comes standard with a limited-slip rear differential.
Like every other BMW, the 2001 Z3 includes several safety features, such as an engine immobilizer, front seat belt pretensioners, stability control, traction control, electronic brake force distribution, four-wheel anti-lock brakes (ABS), and front side-curtain airbags. Occupants of the 2001 BMW Z3 feel protected in case of an accident.
