BMW's Z4 roadster has undergone its first redesign since its inception in 2002. For 2009, Bavaria's sporty 2-seat drop-top gets a more refined look, smoothing out the lines from the previous generation. While the overall shape remains the same, features such as the headlights and taillights have a more flowing, almost elegant presence, when compared to that of the outgoing model.
There are two trims of the Z4, the sDrive30i , and the sDrive35i . We drove the latter, featuring stainless steel exhaust tips, tossing out a throaty note, 17-inch alloy wheels, xenon adaptive headlights, and the more potent of the two powerplants.
The sDrive30i is powered by a 3-liter straight-6, developing 255 horsepower and 220 pound feet of torque, sent to the rear wheels through either a 6-speed manual, or a 6-speed automatic transmission. The sDrive35i receives a twin-turbocharged version of that engine, generating 300 horsepower and 300 pound feet of torque sent to the rear wheels through either a 6-speed manual or 7-speed dual clutch transmission.
Fuel economy for the Z4 ranges from 17 to 19 miles per gallon city, up to 29 miles per gallon highway.
While buyers of the outgoing Z4 had to decide between coupe or convertible, the 2009 model features a power retractable hard top that opens in a bout 20 seconds, giving the consumer the best of both worlds.
Compared to that of other BMW's, the Z4's interior is simple and straightforward. Our test model came with standard leather seating, leather tilt telescoping multifunction steering wheel, and a 10-speaker sound system with 2-suboofers and available satellite radio.
Our test model came equipped with electronic chassis control. With the push of a button, it can take you from the mild-handling "Normal" mode, to the firmer-driving "Sport Plus" mode, for those seeking a little more thrill in their daily drive.
Standard safety equipment on the Z4 includes 4-wheel antilock disc brakes, rollover protection, dynamic stability control, all-speed traction control, which disengages in "Sport Plus" mode, and a full array of front and side impact airbags.
Initial base MSRP for the 2009 BMW Z4 is $45,750. A fully loaded sDrive35i model will top out at just under $70,000. The Z4 is backed by a 4-year, 50,000-mile powertrain warranty.
While the overall design has been smoothed out, the fun-to-drive characteristics and potent powerplants of the BMW Z4 have been maintained. Add to the mix the benefit and versatility of a power-folding hardtop and you have an exceptional, well-designed roadster, ready for all seasons.
