2022 Buick Envision MODEL OVERVIEW

Pros

  • Quiet, practical cabin
  • Unexpected performance aptitude
  • Commendable fuel economy

Cons

  • Sufficient turbo four-cylinder
  • Lower trims miss out on some premium features

The five-passenger Buick Envision saw a major refresh in 2021, but for 2022 it mostly stays the course, and that's not a bad thing. The second generation crossover is still a thing of beauty, featuring handsome good looks and healthy amounts of comfort and convenience features at every trim level. For 2022, you can add fuel economy to that list of strengths.

What We Think

Compared to the characterless, blobby exterior styling of the first generation Envision, the second gen is a breath of fresh air. Design details such as its wider haunches and slim LED head- and taillights project an air of sophistication. This Envision is no slouch, either, doing the sprint from 0-60 mph in 7.1 seconds in our testing, which hangs with its competitive set. The Acura RDX with SH-AWD is quicker, completing the run in 6.8 seconds, while the 2.0-liter Lincoln Corsair required 7.3 seconds.

Surprisingly, the Envision has chops. Shifts from its nine-speed automatic were quick and smooth. Handling was stable and planted, even on rough roads, brakes firm and effective. We were reasonably entertained by the Buick.

Envision Preferred and Essence are suitably furnished, and we appreciate the simplified, ergonomic driver-centric dash and center console controls. Buick sweats the small stuff, too, with details like standard active noise cancellation and a split-level armrest. The upscale interior of the posh Envision Avenir—with amenities like an air ionizer, air quality indicator, and panoramic moonroof—goes far to break the brand's bland stereotype.

Probably the least premium thing about the Envision is its engine. Previously, its base 2.5-liter engine put out 197 hp, while the optional turbo 2.0-liter delivered 252 hp. The 2022 Envision's lone engine falls in between them, delivering 228 hp. On the upside, Envision fuel economy improved, a silver lining that only adds to the crossover's appeal.

Performance and Fuel Economy

The Envision's turbocharged 2.0-liter inline four-cylinder makes a decent 228 horsepower—only "decent" because competitors like the Volvo XC60 T5 and Acura RDX are making more with their turbo 2.0-liters (250 hp and 272 hp, respectively). Where the Envision excels is in fuel economy. Envision FWD base models are rated at 24/31 mpg city/highway and available AWD models at 22/29 mpg city/highway, in both cases beating what the Volvo and Acura can do.

Safety

Standard active safety features across the trim range consist of automatic emergency braking, lane centering, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and automatic high beams. Opting for the top-spec Envision Avenir gets you a standard high definition 360-degree view camera.

The IIHS has yet to test the 2021 Envision, let alone the 2022 model, possibly because the second generation Envision is still very new (2021 was its first model year). As for the NHTSA, they too have no data for the 2022 model, but 2021 Envision FWD and AWD models both earned the administration's top grade, a five-star overall safety rating.

Interior Room and Cargo Space

The Envision has interior space that rivals the best in the segment. It lags slightly behind the XC60 and RDX in front legroom but turns the tables in second row legroom, providing 39.3 inches against their 38 inches. The Envision can't beat the XC60's spacious 63.3 cubic feet of cargo space with the rear seats folded, but behind that rear seat the Buick's 25.2 cubic feet wins against the Volvo's 17.8.

Technology

The base model Envision Preferred is nicely furnished, sporting automatic on-off LED headlights and keyless open and start. The cabin is outfitted with six speakers, a 4.2-inch instrument cluster display, and an 8-inch infotainment touchscreen. The Envision Preferred's interior also offers Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility and active noise cancellation.

Move up to the Essence trim level, and remote start and a hands-free power liftgate are added. The instrument display grows to 8.0 inches, the touchscreen to 10.2 inches, and the sound system takes on one more speaker. Rider comfort is addressed via dual-zone climate control, heated driver and front passenger seats, and a heated steering wheel.

Avenir models are trying to do for Buicks what Denali did for GMC. The top-spec Envision Avenir features Bose nine-speaker audio, navigation, wireless device charging, and a head-up display. The driver gets a massaging seat, the driver and front passenger receive ventilated seats, and the rear outboard seats get heating.

Envision Activewear: The Sport Touring Package

Lower trim Envision buyers can spring for the Sport Touring package to inject athletic looks into their Buick. With it, the SUV receives some moody touches including dark finish 20-inch rims, black roof rails, and dark gloss accents across the exterior. Envisions with the Sport Touring upgrades also receive unique badging, and for 2022, Buick adds alloy sport pedals and "ST" logo-embroidered front-seat headrests and floor mats to the collection. The ST pack is available only for the Envision Preferred or Essence in Ebony Twilight Metallic, Summit White, Satin Steel Metallic, and Cinnabar Metallic exterior colors.
