2006 Buick Lucerne Review

Outmatched by other full-scale sedans.

Reviewed by Automotive on

The 2006 Buick Lucerne is named after an elegant Swiss town. In order to live up to the name, the Lucerne provides luxury as well as elegance. The Buick Lucerne marks an all-new model produced for 2006 and comes as a welcome improvement over other past luxury sedans. Manufactured in the same GM plant as the 2006 Cadillac DTS, the cars have the same wheelbase length, but the Lucerne measures a little shorter overall.

Buick styling seems evident with the attractive and clean exterior look. The Quiet Tuning initiative allows a reduction in engine, wind, and road noise with the sound-deadening materials used in the construction. Along with an excellent ride quality, the Lucerne boasts a very comfortable interior that can carry six passengers.

The Range

Body Styles: sedan
Engines: 3.8-liter V-6, 4.6-liter V-8
Transmissions: four-speed automatic
Models: Buick Lucerne CX, Buick Lucerne CXL, Buick Lucerne CXS

What's New

The Buick LeSabre and Park Avenue get replaced with the full-scale 2006 Buick Lucerne sedan. The Lucerne is based on Cadillac’s DTS platform, seats six passengers, and can be outfitted with General Motors Northstar V-8.

Buick offers three Lucerne models: CX, CXL, and upper-end CXS. The CX features standard 16-inch alloy wheels, the CXL adds bigger 17-inch wheels, and the CXS has even larger 18-inch painted alloy wheels. Other features include rain-sensing wipers, keyless entry, heated outside mirrors, heated washer fluid, and rear park assist. Choosing among the beautiful exterior body paint colors further enhances the 2006 Buick Lucerne to suit any taste.

2006 Buick Lucerne CX interior standard features include power windows, power mirrors, a CD player, audio controls mounted on the steering wheel, and a power driver’s seat with six-way functionality. Adding to the CX and CXL features are leather upholstery, automatic dual-zone climate control, an auxiliary audio jack, and an MP3-capable stereo. The upper-level CXS includes all previously mentioned luxuries, plus satellite radio, driver seat memory, and Harman Kardon 280-watt audio system. Optionally, the rear park assist and remote vehicle starter can be added.

Cleanly styled, the 2006 Buick Lucerne boasts a very nice control layout that looks organized and simple to use. The leather upholstery feels soft and supple with matching grain patterns throughout. The cabin seats six passengers and the trunk holds cargo in up to 17 cubic feet.

Performance & Handling

Two engine options include a 3.8-liter V-6 providing 197 horsepower with 227 lb-ft of torque for the CX models, and the 4.6-liter V-8 that generates 275 hp with 290 lb-ft of torque optionally available on the CXL and standard on the CXS models. Both engines send the power through the automatic four-speed transmission. The 2006 Buick Lucerne provides a serene, plush ride and the acceleration takes only 7.7 seconds to obtain 60 mph from zero with the V-8 engine.

2006 Buick Lucerne safety features include anti-lock brakes, OnStar, traction control, front airbags, and complete curtain airbags for outboard occupants. Brake assist and stability control come standard on the Lucerne CXS; optional on CXL V-8-equipped models and unavailable on the Lucerne V-6 vehicles. The Lucerne models with a front bench seat come equipped with a two-point seat belt for the passenger riding in the middle position. In National Highway Traffic Safety Administration-conducted tests, the Buick Lucerne earns five stars for driver and the front passenger protection in front impacts. It receives four stars for side crash protection of rear and front occupants.
