2021 Cadillac CT5 MODEL OVERVIEW

Pros

  • Intuitive infotainment system
  • Generously proportioned rear seat
  • Strong CT5-V model

Cons

  • Underpowered turbo-four
  • Mixed interior quality
  • Lackluster base model dynamics

With the departure of the CT6 and the CTS long gone, the CT5 is now Cadillac's largest sedan. The CT5, positioned above the CT4, exists on the larger end of the luxury compact sedan segment. The CT5-V takes the place of the CTS V-Sport, while the upcoming CT5 Blackwing carries the torch of the supercharged, tire-smoking CTS-V.

What's New

  • Diamond Sky Special Edition with unique interior and exterior touches
  • CT5 Sport's new V-Performance package adds sport suspension with magnetic ride control and a limited slip differential
  • New Technology package adds a head-up display and 12-inch digital instrument cluster
  • Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto now standard
  • Premium Luxury and CT5-V to gain Super Cruise support in early 2021

What We Think

After naming the Cadillac CTS our Car of the Year for 2014, it's safe to say we had high expectations for the CT5. Unlike the elegantly styled CTS, the CT5's strong proportions are marred by an awkward profile dominated by a bizarre daylight opening at the C-pillar. Also, the chassis is balanced, but suspension tuning causes the CT5 to understeer at the limit.

The standard engine is something of a disappointment, too; it doesn't feel as strong as some competitors. Even with a clever 10-speed automatic that keeps the engine on boil, the CT5 is not the enthusiast's choice in this segment. Interior quality is a mixed bag, but the rotary-controlled infotainment system is an easy-to-use upgrade over CUE systems of old.

The CT5-V solves some of this Cadillac's sleepy powertrain and pushy handling characteristics, but as a package, there's just nothing special about the CT5. In such a competitive segment, there are superior options. Learn about them here.

Performance and Fuel Economy

The standard CT5 is powered by a 2.0-liter turbo-four developing 237 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque. That amount of grunt helps usher the CT5 to 60 mph in 7.1 seconds for RWD variants or in 7.3 seconds for those with AWD. Fuel economy for the turbo-four cars is rated at 21-23/31-32 mpg city/highway.

Premium Luxury and CT5-V trims employ the help of a 3.0-liter twin-turbo V-6. In the Premium Luxury model, it's good for 335 hp and 405 lb-ft; the state of tune utilized in the CT5-V generates 360 hp and 405 lb-ft. Efficiency measures 17-19/25-26 mpg city/highway, with RWD Premium Luxury cars boasting the best numbers and AWD CT5-Vs returning the worst. Regardless of what engine is under the hood, every CT5 makes use of a 10-speed automatic transmission.

Safety

The CT5 earns a five-star overall safety rating from the NHTSA. In fact, the CT5 earns perfect ratings in each of the NHTSA's frontal crash, side crash, and rollover categories.

Cadillac includes forward collision warning and automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection on every CT5. Those equipped with the Driver Awareness package benefit from lane keep assist and automatic high beams. For adaptive cruise control and rear automatic emergency braking, tick the box for the Driver Assist and Advanced Security package.

Cargo Space and Interior Room

The CT5 is on the larger end of its segment, with a longer wheelbase than any of its competitors. That pays off with an above average 37.9 inches of rear legroom (more than 2.0 inches above our top-ranked luxury compact sedans) and 42.4 inches of legroom up front. Cargo volume is mid-pack at 11.9 cubic feet.

Technology

Every CT5 features Cadillac's latest iteration of its CUE infotainment system, in this case running through a 10.0-inch touchscreen display. In addition to touch functionality, the system can also be operated through a rotary dial in the center console. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility are standard, as is a nine-speaker audio setup. Higher trims include a 15-speaker Bose system, integrated navigation, and a 360-degree camera system.
