2005 Cadillac STS Review

Cadillac's first rear-drive luxury sedan.

Reviewed by Automotive on

The all-new, rear-drive 2005 Cadillac STS replaces the front-drive Seville. The available all-wheel drive is also a first for the luxury sedan. It is available with one of two engines: a 3.6-liter V-6 or a Northstar 4.6-liter V-8. V-8 models have the option of rear- or all-wheel drive, while V-6 models are only available with rear drive. Technology takes center stage, both on the standard equipment list and in optional features. A Performance Algorithm Liftfoot system controls the transmission, and optional Magnetic Ride Control operates features performance and touring modes. Keyless Access uses a simple key fob for both entry and ignition, and Smart Remote Start works from as far as 200 feet away. Other high-tech options include adaptive cruise control, Intellibeam automatic high- and low-beam selection, and a four-color head-up display.

Models: Cadillac STS V-6, Cadillac STS V-8

What's New

Cadillac's STS full-size sedan is all-new for 2005.

The four-door Cadillac STS is designed with a chiseled look, with a wide grille with dual horizontal slats, a uniquely-shaped hood, and vertically-stacked headlights. The front bumper angle forward from the headlights and comes to a point. The unadorned sides angle in at the door handles. The rear features vertical taillights bracketing a tall, squared-off trunk with a trapezoidal license plate recess. Dual exhaust tips exit below and at each end of the rear bumper. An optional rear spoiler runs the width of the trunk lid to add stabilizing rear downforce. The LED taillamps have indirect optics for a more even lighting pattern than traditional LEDs. It rides on a 116.4-inch wheelbase and measures 196 inches long, 72.6 inches wide, and 57.6 inches tall. Seventeen-inch alloy wheels are standard on both models. Eighteen-inch wheels are optional on the V-8 model. Stabilitrak electronic stability control, Intellibeam automatic headlamp high-beam control, and rear park assist are also standard on both models. Options for the V-6 model include rain-sensing wipers, polished aluminum wheels, memory settings for the outside mirrors, a rear spoiler, and two premium exterior colors, Line Red and Diamond White. The V-8 model is available with high-intensity discharge headlamps with washers and unique aluminum wheels.

The 2005 Cadillac STS’ interior is as warm and inviting as its exterior is bold and aggressive. Like the Seville, the STS seats five passengers in soft, all-leather seats that's supportive without being overly firm. The arm rests and head restraints are slightly softer than the side bolsters, adding an extra bit of comfort. The sumptuous interior includes genuine eucalyptus wood and aluminum trim. All the essential controls are within easy reach, and the instrument panel features easy-to-read, white-on-black round analogs. Redundant audio and driver information controls are built into the steering wheel. The front center console is pre-wired for cellular and Bluetooth. The cabin is remarkably quiet with specially laminated windshield and front door glass, wind-tunnel-tuned outside mirrors and sound-deadening padding to insulate the interior from road and wind noise. Standard interior features include dual-zone automatic climate control, a Bose AM/FM/CD stereo, and OnStar telematics. Options on the V-6 include eight-way power and heated front seats, a six-disc CD changer, and memory for driver’s seat and steering wheel settings, and satellite radio. Another options package includes heated rear seats, six-disc CD changer with navigation system, eucalyptus wood trim, a wood- and leather-trimmed steering wheel, and power moon roof. The V-8 model adds Tuscany leather surfaces to the options list.

Performance & Handling

Two engines are available for the 2005 Cadillac STS: A 3.6-liter V-6 generates 255 horsepower and produces 252 lb-ft of torque, or a 4.6-liter Northstar V-8 provides 320 hp and 315 lb-ft of torque. The V-8 accelerates from zero to 60 mph in 5.9 seconds, the V-6 in seven seconds. Both engines are teamed with a five-speed automatic transmission with manual-shift mode. Rear drive is standard, and all-wheel drive is available on the V-8 model only. A Performance Handling Package with special springs and shocks is available on rear-drive models only. Other performance options include Cadillac’s Magnetic Ride Control suspension system, performance brakes, adaptive cruise control, limited slip differential, and variable assist steering.

A full spectrum of occupant safety features is standard on the 2005 Cadillac STS including dual, two-stage frontal airbags, front seat-mounted side airbags and front and rear side curtain airbags. Four-wheel anti-lock brakes are also standard.
