2021 Cadillac XT6 MODEL OVERVIEW

Pros

  • Good ride and handling
  • Intuitive infotainment system
  • Strong safety ratings

Cons

  • Cheap-feeling interior
  • Both engines down on power to the competition
  • Too obviously badge-engineered

The XT6 is Cadillac's three-row midsize SUV, positioned above the XT4 and XT5 and offering a smaller seven-seat alternative to the behemoth Escalade. It was introduced as a new model for the 2020 model year and gains a new entry-level engine offering for 2021. The XT6 competes against other midsize three-row luxury vehicles including the Lincoln Aviator, Volvo XC90, and Buick Enclave

What's New

  • New entry-level 2.0T engine
  • Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto functionality
  • New 20-inch wheel design for XT6 Sport
  • Revised exterior color offerings

What We Think

The XT6 isn't a bad SUV, but its appeal plummets when compared to others in its competitive segment. Especially against the Lincoln Aviator in a battle of three-row American luxury machines, the Cadillac's powertrain feels lacking, its interior comes off as cheap, and not enough features differentiate it from less luxuriously positioned vehicles built on the same platform.

That said, the XT6 is not without strong points. Ride quality is comfortable and considering its size, the three-row Caddy handles confidently and light on its feet. It also receives excellent safety ratings. The infotainment system is intuitive, though drivers familiar with other GM infotainment setups will be disappointed with the Cadillac system's obvious similarities. There's too much road noise, as well. Do yourself a favor and go for the Lincoln.

Performance and Fuel Economy

The most significant XT6 news for 2021 is the arrival of a new base engine. Whereas the XT6 debuted with GM's corporate 3.6-liter V-6 as its sole powertrain option, the 2020 model employs the help of a 2.0-liter turbo-four. This is the same forced-induction four-pot under the hood of entry-level CT4s, CT5s, XT4s, and XT5s, so it's no surprise to find it in the XT6. It develops the same 237 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque it does in other Cadillacs. EPA-estimated fuel economy numbers read 21/26-27 mpg city/highway.

Premium Luxury and Sport trims of the XT6 stick with the six-cylinder, a 310-hp, 271-lb-ft V-6 that serves myriad uses across the GM portfolio. With either engine, the XT6 uses a nine-speed automatic transmitting power for standard FWD or available AWD. Sport models are AWD only. In our test of an XT6 Sport for SUV of the Year evaluations, the V-6 motivated the three-row Caddy to 60 mph in 6.8 seconds. Estimated fuel economy is rated just behind the turbo-four at 18-19/25-26 mpg.

Safety

For its exceptional performance in IIHS safety testing, the XT6 earns the institute's highest possible designation of 2020 Top Safety Pick+. It also receives a five-star overall safety rating from the NHTSA, with five-star frontal and side crash scores and a four-star rollover rating.

Cadillac also includes a host of active safety features as standard on the XT6. Automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, lane keep assist, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and automatic high beams are equipped on all models. Opting for the Driver Assist package adds adaptive cruise control and rear automatic emergency braking.

Cargo Space and Interior Room

The XT6 offers seating for seven across three rows of seating. Legroom measures 41.2 inches up front, 39.1 inches in the second row, and 29.5 inches in the way-back. Cargo capacity is rated at 12.6 cubic feet behind the third row, 43.1 with the way-back seats folded down, and 78.7 cubes behind the front chairs.

Technology

Every XT6 features an 8.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system that can also be controlled with a center-mounted rotary knob. New for 2021, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto now operate wirelessly. Eight-speaker Bose audio is standard, and a 14-speaker Bose system is available.
