I have had my 08 Chevy Aveo5 for a couple of years now and it has served me pretty well overall. I live in Southern California, and have to commute up and down I-5 twice a day 5 days a week. This little car, although not the best looking out there, hasn't given me any real problems, and I have gotten decent gas mileage out of it. I get about 30 miles per gallon based on my mixed highway and local commuting.
I wish it was a little more powerful, since sometimes when I am going up a hill it feels like it is struggling a bit, but I always make it to the top. It also can get a little loud in the cabin when the engine is working hard, but I can still hear my music.
The interior is pretty basic, no major frills (cruise control and power windows are the "fancy" part of the inside). I'm average height (5'9") and I don't feel squished inside it. I use my iPod with a dock anyway so I don't really care about the basic audio package. The AC is still cold when I need it, and the heater defogs the windows pretty well. I have 2 dogs that I take to the beach pretty much every weekend, and they fit in the backseat with all of the toys and blankets comfortably.
For the price, its not a bad buy. Right now it has about 53k miles on it and I haven't had any major breakdowns with the regular maintenance (oil changes, new tires, etc.). If you are looking for a cheap little efficient car, I would say an Aveo5 isn't a bad choice.
