2002 Chevrolet Blazer Review

A reasonably-priced basic midsize SUV.

Reviewed by Automotive on

Overview

The 2002 model year saw the launch of the all-new Chevrolet TrailBlazer into the midsize SUV market. Even though the company has a new vehicle in this market, it continues to produce the smaller Chevrolet Blazer and will do until 2003 at the earliest. It comes in two trim levels and two body styles. The base LS have either two or four doors and can be equipped with two or all-wheel drive. The upscale Xtreme model has a two-door body style only and comes with a two-wheel-drive system only.

The Range

Body Styles: SUV
Engines: 4.3-liter V-6
Transmissions: four-speed automatic, five-speed manual
Models: Chevrolet Blazer LS, Chevrolet Blazer Xtreme

What's New

The 2002 Chevrolet Blazer sees cosmetic changes to the exterior and additional exterior paint colors were offered for both trim levels, while sport stripes became an option for the Xtreme models. The paint scheme for the LS models was a new monotone one, and it also got a new wheel style.

Exterior

From the exterior, the 2002 Chevrolet Blazer has a rugged appearance. With the base LS models, owners can choose between two- and four-door body styles with room for up to six passengers in the four-door model. The Xtreme has a two-door body style only and features significant visual clues to distinguish it from the base model. The suspension has been lowered for the Xtreme models, and it is equipped with 16-inch wheels to give it a sportier feel. Flared fenders, modified front and rear fascias, tinted windows, side skirts, and a body-color grille give the Xtreme a slightly more aggressive look than the base model.

Interior

Depending on the model of the 2002 Chevrolet Blazer, there is seating for five or six passengers. Bucket seats are found in the front of the two-door models, while a bench seat is found in the front-of the four-door models to increase seating capacity by one. The rear bench seat in all models is a split folding one, as is the front bench seat in the four-door models, to increase cargo capacity as needed. Legroom can be found to be lacking for adult passengers in the front and the rear of the 2002 Chevrolet Blazer. Also, while the interior is laid out in a straightforward, easy to use manner, the quality of the plastics is seriously lacking. Standard features include power windows and locks, a tilt steering wheel, and cruise control. A leather-wrapped steering wheel is included as standard in the Xtreme model, and a sunroof and an upgraded audio system are available as options. Leather upholstery is an option for all models, as well as remote keyless entry.

Performance & Handling

All models of the 2002 Chevrolet Blazer are equipped with the same 4.3-liter V-6 engine that produces 190 horsepower and 250 lb-ft of torque. A four-speed automatic transmission is standard for the base LS models, while the Xtreme models have a five-speed manual transmission as standard and the four-speed automatic as an option. The all-wheel-drive system found on the LS is equipped with an electronic transfer case that is operated with the push of a button. With the auto mode engaged, the system automatically switches between two- and all-wheel drive when it senses any wheel slippage. By doing so, the driver can benefit from the gas mileage of a two-wheel-drive vehicle and the additional safety of a four-wheel-drive vehicle without having to make any changes. The engine provides adequate power for a quick takeoff and maneuvering at mid-range speeds, but loses power at higher speeds. Steering is firm and responsive, and handling is good overall. Although the 2002 Chevrolet Blazer is truck like in most respects, it still provides a relatively smooth and comfortable ride compared to many competitors.

Safety

Standard safety equipment found on all models of the 2002 Chevrolet Blazer includes four-wheel anti-lock brakes and dual airbags.
