2011 Chevrolet Camaro Review

This sport coupe is still a performer and a looker

Reviewed by Automotive on

In a Nutshell
The 2011 Chevrolet Camaro is a sport coupe with a high performance engine and a retro design that evokes the very popular 1969 model. Propelled by either a 3.6-liter V-6 or a 6.2-liter V-8 coupled to a six-speed manual or automatic transmission, the Chevy Camaro comes with rear-wheel drive and is about the same size as the original model, with a wheelbase measuring 112.3 inches and weighing 3700 to 3900 pounds, depending upon the amount of equipment.

While the Camaro sport configuration hosts a small block SS engine with 426 horsepower, you can get an automatic transmission coupled with a 400 horsepower engine. The 3.6-liter V-6 engine is more fuel-efficient, however, with an average EPA rating in the 17 mpg city / 28 mpg highway. The Chevy Camaro is equipped with state-of-the-art safety equipment.

New for 2011

For 2011, the rating for Camaro's direct injection V-6 increased by 8 horses to 312 horsepower, while the heads-up display is now standard on the 2LT and 2SS. All trims got six months' free OnStar Directions and Connections.

Essentials

Engines: 3.6L V-6, 6.2L V-8.
Transmissions: 6-speed manual, 6-speed automatic.
Body Style: Coupe
Models: LS Coupe, LT Convertible, LT Coupe, SS Convertible, SS Coupe

On the Outside

Long-hood, short-deck and radical tumblehome are reminiscent of the 1969 Camaro. A 67-degree windshield rake contributes to a big on the outside, small on the inside feel for the 2011 Camaro.

From the Inside

The Chevy Camaro's retro look extends to the four-passenger interior, with deep, recessed gauges in square housings, three-spoke wheel, and optional console-mounted gauge package, which is standard on 2LT and 2SS.

Driving Performance

While the Chevy Camaro SS is more powerful than its rivals, its excessive weight hampers performance. It's a responsive performer but with a heavy feel. Motor Trend recorded a 13.1-second quarter-mile at 110.8 mph, and its 25.2 seconds at 0.73 g average on the MT Figure-8 is equally impressive. If you choose the smooth V-6 version, you'll get good performance and still have adequate handling.

Safety Equipment

Standard on the Chevy Camaro for safety equipment are four front-seat airbags, side curtains front and rear, door interlock pins, StabiliTrak dynamic stability control, and four-wheel disc brakes with hydraulic brake assist. SS models have Brembo four-piston brake calipers.

Gas Mileage

V-6: 17 mpg city/29 mpg highway (manual); 18 mpg city/29 mpg highway (automatic)
V-8: 16 mpg city/24 mpg highway (manual); 16 mpg city/25 mpg highway (automatic)
