1999 Chevrolet Cavalier Review

An affordable vehicle with limited features but convenient for urban commutes.

Reviewed by Automotive on

Overview

The Chevrolet Cavalier is a compact car available in a range of body styles. It replaced the Chevrolet Monza in 1982 and was, in turn, succeeded by the Cobalt in 2006. It is part of the third-generation models built for the model years 1995 through 2005. The 1999 models had a relatively non-descript profile with a longer hood area. These were available primarily in three body styles including sedan, coupe, and convertible, with a range of engines and transmissions. Models were known for dependability, convenience, price, and good gas mileage.

The Range

Body Styles: coupe, sedan, convertible
Engines: 2.2-liter four-cylinder, 2.4-liter four-cylinder
Transmissions: three-speed automatic, four-speed automatic with overdrive, five-speed manual with overdrive
Models: Chevrolet Cavalier, Chevrolet Cavalier RS, Chevrolet Cavalier Z24

What's New

The 1999 Chevrolet Cavalier notes no major changes for the 1999 model year, but the carmaker logo was removed from the trunk’s lid.

Exterior

The 1999 Chevrolet Cavalier came in three body styles, the coupe, sedan, and the convertible, and each had a similar profile outside of the two-doors on the coupe and convertible, and of course, the removable top for the convertible. It has a wedged look with a sharp front and a slightly extended hood area. Some exterior features include optional glass rear window for the convertible, power roof for the convertible Z24, spoiler on the RS and Z24 and optional on other models and optional fog lights on the Z24. Moreover, it comes in a range of colors.

Interior

The 1999 Chevrolet Cavalier sedan models seat five comfortably. Rear room is a little tighter in the coupe and convertible models. Some interior features include power windows and locks, tilt steering, speed control, power moonroof on non-convertibles is optional on some models, air-conditioning, and an audio system with optional CD player.

Performance & Handling

The 1999 Chevrolet Cavalier offers a 115-hp, 2.2-liter four-cylinder or a 150-hp, 2.4-liter four-cylinder. The 115-hp models can struggle while merging and passing at high speeds. While the 150-hp model does better in this regard, some competitors will outperform it here. Handling is good, steering is accurate and easy, and it has good visibility and is convenient for city driving. Transmissions include a five-speed manual standard on all but the LS, a three-speed automatic available only on the base model, and a four-speed automatic standard on the LS and available on all other models.

Safety

Safety features include standard dual front impact airbags and ABS brakes, standard traction control on the LS, and optional traction control on all other models.
