New for 2017

After a mid-cycle update in 2016, changes for the 2017 Chevrolet Equinox are limited to a pair of special-edition models: the Midnight Edition and Sport Edition. Available on the LT with the Convenience package, both special-edition models feature blacked out exterior details including the front grille, front and rear Chevrolet bowtie emblems, 18-inch alloy wheels, roof rack cross bars, and black mirror caps. The interior features Jet Black perforated leather seats with memory for the driver's seat and exterior mirrors. The Midnight Edition is finished in Mosaic Black Metallic Paint, and the Sport Edition features a Summit White exterior.

Vehicle Summary

Since it arrived for 2005, the Chevrolet Equinox has been the bowtie brand's entrant in the compact crossover segment. Slotting between the subcompact Trax and three-row Traverse in size and price, the Equinox is larger than many of its direct competitors and one of few models to offer a V-6 engine. The Equinox has seen sales gains over the past five years, making it Chevrolet's second best-selling model behind the Silverado pickup for all of 2015.

Overview

The 2017 Chevrolet Equinox is available with two engine options; the first is a 2.4-liter I-4 rated 182 hp and 172 lb-ft. Also available is a 3.6-liter V-6 rated 301 hp and 272 lb-ft. Both engines are backed by a six-speed automatic and are available with front- or all-wheel-drive. Four-cylinder models are EPA-rated 20-21/28-31 mpg city/highway, and fuel economy for the more powerful V-6 engine drops to 16-17/23-24 mpg.

The recent update also brought simplified trim levels, which now includes the base L, midrange LS and LT, and top-spec Premier. Other changes include revised front end styling and new taillight graphics as well as a new 7.0-inch color touchscreen infotainment system with Bluetooth and a rearview camera standard.

Safety

The Chevrolet Equinox crossover has a four-star overall safety rating from the NHTSA (out of a possible five stars) and is considered a 2016 Top Safety Pick by the IIHS. The Equinox received a Basic rating for front crash prevention for its Forward Collision Alert system. The optional Driver Confidence package (LT and LTZ) includes Side Blind Zone Alert, Rear Cross-Traffic Alert and Rear Park Assist and the Driver Confidence Package II (LTZ) includes Forward Collision Alert and Lane Departure Warning. A rearview camera is standard.

What We Think

In our review of the four-cylinder all-wheel-drive combo, we said the "Equinox felt adequate on congested Los Angeles streets, but it struggled a bit on onramps. It was able to get up to freeway speeds before merging. The 2.4-liter engine feels somewhat harsh especially toward the top of the rpm range. Despite its unpleasant exhaust tone, the engine provides linear power delivery."

We preferred the six-cylinder engine in a review of the mechanically related GMC Terrain: "On the street, the power difference with the V-6 is noticeable. Where the four-cylinder-powered Chevrolet Equinox felt merely adequate, the more powerful Terrain Denali felt confident pulling away from side streets and parking lots and merging on the freeway."

Cool Fact

Cruise the internet with the Equinox's 4G LTE Wi-Fi hotspot - just not while driving.
