Reviewed by Automotive on

The Chevrolet Silverado K1500 is a four-wheel-drive truck available in a regular cab or an extended cab. The regular cab offers two different trim levels: the base and LS. The Base model comes with the 4.3-liter, V-6 engine in the regular cab and the 4.3-liter V-6 or the 4.8-liter V-8 in the regular cab. Both engines are paired with a five-speed manual transmission in the base model. The LS comes with a 4.3-liter, V-6 engine in the regular cab model and either a 4.3-liter V-6 or 4.8-liter V-8 in the extended cab model. The LS model’s engine, in either case, is paired with a five-speed manual transmission. The LT model, only available in the extended cab model, comes with a 5.3-liter V-8 engine paired with a four-speed automatic transmission.

What's New

Although the K1500 was completely redesigned in 1999, there are a few changes for the 2000 model year. A fourth access door is added as an option for the extended cab model. The door locks are now programmable to enable the doors to unlock automatically when the engine turns off. Wheel flares are now an option and a new tonneau cover is available from the factory for the LT model. A new cargo box is available for LT models, and the LS and LT models get a new self-dimming rearview mirror with a compass and exterior temperature display.

The exterior monotone paint comes in a variety of colors. The base model comes in seven color choices, while the LS and LT come in 10 color choices. Standard exterior features for all models include a pickup box, rear step bumper, fixed antenna, variable intermittent front windshield wipers, and a sun visor strip.

The interior comes in two color choices for the base model, while the LS and LT come in three interior color choices. Standard interior features for all models include a passenger visor vanity mirror, adjustable front head restraints, and a tilt sport steering wheel. Storage features include dual door bins and a lighted glove box. Other features include an AM/FM stereo with seek-scan and a clock, dome light with delay, front reading lights, three 12-volt power outlets, and retained accessory power. Although air-conditioning and cruise control do not come standard on the base model, they come standard on the other models and can be added as options for the base model.

Performance & Handling

The 2000 Chevrolet K1500 uses a front short and long arm suspension and a leaf rear suspension with leaf rear springs. This suspension combination allows the vehicle to react well to imperfections on the road and provides a smooth ride for the occupants. It also helps the vehicle distribute weight evenly when carrying heavy loads. The K1500 also comes equipped with front and rear gas pressurized shocks. These allow for a smoother ride over bumps and other rough areas.

The NHTSA gives the K1500 three out of five stars for driver’s side frontal impacts and four out of five stars for passenger’s side frontal impacts. Standard safety features include driver and passenger airbags with cancellable passenger front-impact side, four-wheel anti-lock brakes, side impact beams, fully automatic headlamps and daytime running lights, pickup cargo box light, under-hood light, illuminated entry, and a center high-mounted stop light. There are also warnings for low fluid levels, engine temperature, leaving the lights on, leaving the key in the ignition, when the turn signal is left on, and when the vehicle needs to be serviced. It also features an immobilizer that will only allow it to start with the correct key.
