The 1998 Chevrolet Prizm is a sedan that comes with one engine choice, three transmission choices, and two trim levels. The 1.8-liter, four-cylinder engine comes paired with the standard five-speed manual transmission .The four-speed automatic and the three-speed automatic transmissions are available as options. Two noteworthy features of this car are the optional front-side impact airbags and the class I trailering.

What's New

The newly-designed Prizm replaced the outdated Geo Badge this model year. Improvements include a larger engine and an array of new exterior and interior colors. The 1998 Prizm features side airbags and a handling package for the LSi models, and depowered front airbags that will decrease the chance of injury from airbag deployment.


Standard exterior features for the 1998 Chevrolet Prizm include body-colored front and rear bumpers, black body-side moldings, a black grille, and monotone paint. A compact steel spare wheel/tire, a fixed antenna, light tinted windows, and trailering are also standard. A power-sliding, tilting, front glass sunroof is available as an option. The base model comes with silver-styled steel wheels, with the option of regular steel wheels or silver alloy wheels. The LSi comes standard with steel wheels, and has the option of silver alloy wheels.


This car is capable of seating up to five occupants, including the driver. It comes with cloth-upholstered. The driver’s seat and front passenger’s seat are both six-way adjustable.

The base model has a rear bench seat, and the LSi has a 60-40 split- folding rear bench seat, with a regular bench seat available as an option. The cloth upholstery in the LSi is premium cloth. Standard comfort and convenience features for both models include dual visor vanity mirrors, a day-night rearview mirror, adjustable front head restraints, fixed rear head restraints, a dome light, a cargo light, under seat ducts, one 12v DC power outlet, and a driver’s footrest. Standard storage features include a center front armrest with storage, a lighted glove box, a full floor console, front and rear cup holders, bin instrument panel storage, and dual door bins. The LSi also comes with two seatback storage pockets and a rear armrest with pass-through.

An AM/FM/Cassette stereo, four speakers, and a CD player are optional for both models. The LSi comes with the additional options of power front and rear windows and a rear child seat.

Performance & Handling

The 1.8-liter, four-cylinder engine on the 1998 Chevrolet Prizm is capable of producing 120 horsepower (hp) and 122 lb-ft of torque. This sedan uses rack and pinion steering, and comes equipped with front and rear strut suspension supported by coil springs. Anti-roll bars in the front and rear are also included, and cruise control is available as an option. This front-wheel-drive vehicle is capable of towing up to 1,500 lbs.


The 1998 Chevrolet Prizm comes standard with front vented disc/rear drum brakes, driver and passenger front airbags, front seatbelt pre-tensioners, rear child safety door locks, driver and passenger front airbags come standard, fully automatic headlamps, daytime running lights, a center high-mounted stop light, halogen headlights, variable intermittent front windshield wipers, power door locks, and a mechanical trunk/door/fuel flap release. Anti-lock brakes are optional.

This vehicle warns the driver when the oil pressure, battery level, or fuel levels are low. The driver is also warned when the lights are left on, when the keys are left in the ignition, or when the door is left open. A rear window defogger and driver and passenger side-impact airbags are available as options. The LSi also comes with remote keyless entry.
