2005 Chevrolet Silverado Review

A rock among pebbles with great power and smooth riding.

Reviewed by Automotive on

Overview

The 2005 Chevrolet Silverado series has limitless customization options. It features many new additions this year and varied horsepower depending on engine size. The exterior is up to par with its competitors and looks great while the interior is roomy and comfortable. The Chevrolet Silverado lives up to its slogan.

The Range

Body style: Pickup
Engines: 4.3-liter V-6, 4.8-liter V-8, 5.3-liter V-8, 6.0-liter V-8
Transmissions: Five-speed manual, four-speed automatic
Models: Chevrolet Silverado, Chevrolet Silverado Work Truck, Chevrolet Silverado LS, Chevrolet Silverado LT, Chevrolet Silverado Z71, Chevrolet Silverado SS

What's New

The 2005 Chevrolet Silverado has various new features. On the two-wheel-drive models, Quadrasteer was removed and standard wheel sizes changed to 17 inches. For the extended and crew cab models, there is the option for a power sunroof with a universal transmitter and an overhead console. Drum brakes replaced the four-wheel discs. Also new this year is dual electric cooling fans for quiet efficiency. The front end and running boards were refined to improve the fuel economy as well. The Short-Box Extended Cabs with four-wheel drive now has an all-aluminum V-8 engine. In addition to all the new features this year, there is a gas/electric hybrid model offered in limited quantities in the western states and Florida.

Exterior

The 2005 Chevy Silverado looks great on the outside. There are nine colors to choose from ranging from dark to light. All models of the Silverado have a step-bumper and 17-inch chromed steel wheels, except for the Work Truck model. The Z71 off road model has all the features of the LS model plus on- and off-road tires, skid-plates, wheel flares, and deep-tinted glass. The SS model comes with 20-inch wheels and tires, a special exterior trim, which is lower to the ground and full-time all-wheel drive. The headlights are dual halogen composite and feature daytime running lamps for added visibility.

Interior

The 2005 Chevy Silverado has cruise control and a CD player on all trim levels except the Work Truck model. The LS models add power windows, locks, and mirrors. The audio and upholstery were also improved for this model. The LT model has leather upholstery, automatic climate control, and OnStar. The sound system in the LT model is of great quality and comes equipped with a Bose audio system. The optional interior features include: XM Radio, Panasonic DVD Passenger Entertainment System, rear seat audio controls for the Crew Cab model, and power sunroof, and OnStar for the Extended Cab and Crew Cab models. The trucks also include tilt-adjustable steering wheels. There is seating capacity for three to six passengers depending on the model as some have two rows.

Performance & Handling

The 2005 Chevrolet Silverado has a few different options for power; the base model and Work Truck model feature a 4.3-liter V-6 engine, which produces 195 horsepower allowing for 250 lb-ft of torque. The LS trim provides a 4.8-liter V-8 engine, which produces 285 horsepower allowing for 295 lb-ft of torque. The LS Crew Cab model features a 5.3-liter V-8 engine, which produces 295 horsepower and 335 lb-ft of torque. Finally, the SS model has a 6.0-liter V-8 engine, which produces 345 horsepower and allows for 380 lb-ft of torque. The 2005 Chevy Silverado rides smoothly without the Quadrasteer system; models with this feature tend to bounce more and have a rougher ride. The Quadrasteer system is designed for hauling and towing at lower speeds so if speed is a must then the Quadrasteer system would not be the right choice. There are options for four-wheel drive on all models and the models without are rear drive.

Safety

The 2005 Chevrolet Silverado is rated on an average level with three stars for passenger crash test rating and rated four stars for both driver and rollover ratings. All models have the standard four-wheel anti-lock brake system, daytime running lights for added visibility, child seat anchors, turn signal mirrors and traction control. The airbags on the Silverado inflate to an appropriate amount depending on the severity of the crash.
